    Dog just got chewed

Hopefully he will be ok. Dog just got droped off to vet after being chewed by a snake. Was cleaning up some old chemical drums around the shed when I heard this haunting howl that never herd befor I found him collapsed and out to it. Raced him to vet and by time got there he was up walking round. Bloody scary stuff.

Hope he makes a full recovery

We seem to have a lot of brown snakes around on our block at the moment so being very alert ,we also saw a python slipping empty handed out of the chook pen the other night

We have a creek that runs through our block and it seems the snakes are going to the water, we also saw the return of our resident platypus recently.

When I lived in Childers, Qld the brown snakes were a constant problem in the farm. Our dog have couple of close calls.

Hopefully your dog will be OK if the Vet can give him the shots for the venom.
Our nephew's Jack Russell has been bitten twice by a snake, and luckily survived both times. You are right about the strange barking though...our Staffy would give a really weird bark when he saw a snake.

Hope all goes well with your dog.

Hope it all works out OK.
I am constantly worried about snakes and our dogs, but so far we have been lucky, only had a couple of large carpet snakes around lately

Our Koolie did recently get a tick,$1000 later, she is OK but looks like a whippet as they shaved her to make sure she only had one tick on her.

Those ticks are nasty, I'd never heard of them before I moved to Australia. Avery good friend of mine has a cattle dog that was a bit crook once and they couldn't figure out why....thought he'd been bitten by a snake or something....so they took him to a vet...who found 3 paralysis ticks on him.

Remarkable he managed to survive it. Back to his old self within a day or so.
Cutting his old boys off is what really changed him. He used to get too hot during the day and the family would look for him then find him sitting on the top step of their pool in about 2 inches of water - just cooling his spuds off with a satisfied look on his face. I've seen him do this, it's nothing short of hilarious.

Now he does the same thing but with a sort of shy, unhappy look on his face.

    Poor Max.

Report from the vet this arvo said he is going ok but want to keep him in over night to keep an eye on him. His name is Max also.

It was not a bark just this creepy short howl that I have never herd befor, was like a cry for help. When I found him I thought he was dead was just lifeless.

Was just speaking to neighbor who works for ergon said one of the ergon guys was bitten and died yr or so ago within an hr.

    Glad to hear he's ok,,

Vets do have pills to ward off ticks---
    and heart worms and fleas
    and bad temper and-

But it's hard to know what is the best for ticks, particularly as our springer is always in the nearest creek, dam or whatever water she can find.

A breeder recently told me to use cydectin. He has used it for years.Puts 2 ml on the back of the neck of a 20kg dog every month, that is uses 1ml per 10kg of dog.Never had an issue and never had a tick when using it.Said it was waterproof as well,as is frontline and advantix.

We did use advantix or frontline, didn't have any problem with ticks, but it wasn't good with fleas.

Find comfortis good for fleas, but has no protection for ticks.

I would like to use cydectin, but need to find out more about it and if anyone else uses it.
