Slow down a bit everything is stacked against the box and the 20/50 is too thick avoid using the overdrive where possible.

You also need to check the oil levels a low thick oil level is a disaster waiting to happen.

Via the modern day equivalent to smoke signals fromsome place other than the cave where my hat hangs.

Keep us up to date Gav, there are quite a few members between where youe and Sydney if you need a hand.

If worse comes to worse one of us can come and pick your camper up if you need some load taken off.

I think you may need to drop that oil out and put something more suitable as Dave seems to think it's too thick.

A bonus is that it's pretty flat right through Gundagai from Glenrowan.

This might be a dumb question. But how does a manual gearbox generate heat at all. The gears should all be in constant mesh, and there is no torque converter pump/slipping to generate heat.

Unless of course it has a failing bearing running red hot .....

You know it maybe quite normal. After all I've never heard of anyone having the capability of reading transmission tempertures. It is however bolted to something that runs at about 95degrees. So I'm not surprised the gearbox oil/gearbox eventually ends up at the same temperature as the engine it's bolted too.

I agree with not using the overdrive when towing but why do you think the oil is too heavy? The overdrive should not be used in high load conditions - hills/towing etc.

I have always used engine oil (as is advised in all the documentation) and have used my 101 in plenty high load conditions and towed my Jayco campervan over long distances in hilly conditions - all OK.

I do change my oil every few thousand km (basically because my 101 does not get a lot of use) and the oil has always come out looking good and not being overworked.

I certainly would not go any heavier oil and maybe one grade lower but the oil should be OK.

Is the handbrake dragging putting heat into the system?

Ok, overdrive is now disengaged, and I've slowed down to 85 ish. Been pulling up every 30 or so KM to check temps and they have settled down a lot. Now I'm only getting mid 80's from the TC, and the overdrive is the same, so I guess a combination of speed, big hills, and the overdrive were pushing the temps up.

I'm now well clear of Albury about 120 clicks out of Gundagai which is around the place I tend to pull stumps for the night.

I'll check back here and let you all know how I'm travelling. A lot happier now, I was starting to think I'd have to head home, but I'm confident to push on now.

What oil should I be running in the gearbox anyway? I though engine oil was correct?

I am happy to drain it and refill it if need be.
