    Generator Honda Or Yamaha?

    Hi All

We have just ordered a Goldstream Semi off road camper. I got them to put in an extra deep cycle battery and we have a good 80 watt solar panel. I would like to get a good small generator as a back up just in case.

Looking at either the Honda or Yamaha around the 2000 watt size. At the risk of starting another Engel or Waeco type discussion can anyone point out the Good or bad bits, Should we get the Honda Or the Yamaha??

    Reliability?
    Parts?
    Service?
    Noise levels?
Anything else we might need to know?

There will also be times that I will use it for work to run a small drill or power saw. Think I would rather spend a few $ more to get a reliable unit than a cheaper Chinese version.

On a slighly different tangent Andrew, how about fitting more solar so you don't need a genie?

We have 270 watts of solar panels fitted to our van and never need a genie and we use heaps of power with TV, Stereo, lots of lights always on at night for many hours etc.
    Cheers,
    Terry

Get more solar panels and leave the stinking, noisy bloody generator alone

Just my 10 cents. But if you overkill with solar you never need a genny. I did a trip round oz for 18 months and had an appropriate solar system (from solar steve with an aulro discount). Not once did I need a genny. Ever.

    Hi again
We will be looking at adding a lot more solar, I have used Solar Steve for the 80 watt panels we already have. But I have a good reason for wanting the Generator for a back up if required.

We may never use it while camping if all works as planned. I also agree with the noisy stinking bit. Some of the trips I have planned for, we will be on our own with no outside help so having the extra security just in case we have a problem for me is worth having a bit of gear sitting in the back just in case.

    So back to the question

    Honda Or Yamaha??

Apart from the 270 watts of solar we also have 2 x 100 amp AGM battery's fitted and a good quality solar regulator.

If your really really stuck and the weather is crap for days on end just have a Anderson plug powered off of your tug and have that connected a charger connected to your battery's.
Not ideal but if your stuck then its a good stop gap measure and chances are if the weather is crap long enough to run down your battery's then you will more than likely be moving on anyway.

In three years of use three or four times a year for up to a week at a time we have never had to connect the vans battery's once to the alternator and often our friends while camping end up running their Engels and ARB chest fridges off of our outside 12 v power points to save their battery's and so they don't have to run their genies.
    Cheers,
    Terry

Ummm now that it's been established that gen sets are not flavour of the month... the OP still has need for said item for work to run a small power saw and/or power drill...

There are a couple of people on this forum who actually sell/maintain gensets for a living... perhaps a bit of a search would be in order. Use the "google" facility in the bottom lhs of the page, it's very quick!

    cheers

Look up Kulkyne generators. They us a yamaha motor. I was going to buy one but I decided to buy a chinese one with a remote electric start instead. I use it a bit for work and the remote start is handy.

    Thanks Terry

We will be running 2 100 amp deep cycles in the van & a similar 1 in the ute, at this time we have solar on the van & ute but no duel battery system due to a few warranty concerns with the new vehicle.

I plan to at the least add another 100 watts of solar soon. The 80 watt panel & just 1 old cranking battery has served us well in the past so our up graded set up will be a lot better.

Ok we both posted at the same time so I didn't read your last post until after I had replied the second time.

Do you need a 2000 w genie? ...possibly an alternative is the smaller EU10i Honda genie which makes heaps power and is very frugal.

By the way we have a EU20i for work and it is great but in many situations is overkill.
    Cheers,

Our honda 2eu was bought second hand 8 years or so ago.
Has been faultless and very easy to service.
Has saved our skin our fridge and freezers on numerous power outs
Have used it for power tools plenty enough.
And use it annually on a family camp running multiple fridges and box fans etc.
(Before all you hate on me we are camping in fnq in december. . . Only our group is silly enough to do this as such no one is harmed -either way i have built a sound dampened and weatherproof box such that from camp with 25m of lead the gennie is only just audible)

Having said all that, unless you are carrying fuel for another purpose (we generally have 2 or3 , 44s on the above camp for boat fuel) a 2eu with fuel will take up space and risk spillage etc and i would likely run a beefed solar setup for touring.
