It seems drivers don't know how to overtake now.

I often get flashing lights, fingers and abuse from on coming traffic when I overtake even though I have returned to my lane with over 100m to spare.
Drivers think you shouldn't be overtaking with on coming traffic.

It seems in these days of multiple lane highways, overtaking lanes every few kilometers, double lines where there used to be broken lines and 600 plus hp prime movers people no longer move to the on coming traffic lane to overtake so they sit there waiting for the overtaking lane and anyone who goes around them or comes toward them is a dangerous idiot.

    Follow the leader

It's very observable Garry - most people are "followers" - content to just poke along. You just happened to be the leader in the Haffie. The problem starts when you get a few "leaders" and they want to race each other or are impatient and dart from lane to lane to advance their position or tear past everybody else - often to a disaster.

Just watch pedestrians on a footpath.

Yes they will always be out there, but we also seem to suffer failings as part of our attitude to driving as a collective. I've mentioned this before, but during 2 weeks in South Africa I noticed plenty of vehicles doing exactly what Garry was doing - driving slowly and well off to the left. Result was that all the overtaking traffic happily went around the slower vehicles, and even oncoming traffic moved over to make it easier for vehicles to pass. No fuss, no blaring horns, no middle finger salutes. Just the way it was expected and the way it was done.
Not quite sure why as a collective of drivers we can't manage a similar process when the need arises - but have a feeling it says something unflattering about our attitudes when behind the wheel.

C'mon, they're easy. I love watching out of towners try to figure it out though...

I'll have to follow Mrs HH through the city filming it....

If I stand on a fence post maybe you will be able to see me wave.

    What's a hook turn?

Gav, you can do it. I can do it. There are probably one or two others on this forum who have the skill to attempt a hook turn. I have stood on various corners in the city and, for entertainment, observed how many drivers get it wrong. A surprising number of them are taxi drivers.
