My opinion do what to think it needs then take it in for a test , In my experience they always find something in the chance they might make some money out of you

Yeah as said

Do what you know what needs doing and check the normal obvious things , Lights, washers , wipers. But some things like bushes can really be only checked properly when the truck is over the pits.

When I got my disco done he told me the front hockey stick bushes were ok but had 6 months left in them so he wanted the changed before he would give me the certificate. Which I could not understand , but his face dropped when I told him I would be back that afternoon with them done as I had a front hockey stick all bushes up and ready to go.

My Disco and two defenders are all the same for bushes so I have a spare set made up at home. So I just went home and swapped them over.

Think that was just a money making exercise that back fired.

Same as Rangieman said , if you do your own spanner work always do the work you know that needs to be done then get it inspected.
Guaranteed you will need a new windscreen.

get the test. From someone cooperative. THe ones who did my last few were great, I'd get the check done, I'd pay for it, but they would not date it as within reason, I would go back when the items were addressed and they'd complete it then

They can't do that anymore as all RWC's have to be photographed with a date stamp. If they get audited by Vicroads the date of first inspection and the photo will not match.

Loanrangie. The rules on windscreens aren't as tough as they used to be. My D2's screen 18 months ago easily passed an RWC that a few years ago would not have a hope in hell.

As for the original question, fix what you know first, as you only have seven days to fix defects, so you want the list short.

Some basics you can check your self before hand.

1 No warning lights illuminated on dash
2 No frayed seat belts,
3 Horn, indicators and lights working, lenses must be unbroken and not faded
4 Washer and wipers must work ( cheap to install a new set of wiper blade rubbers, they seem to pick on this)
5 Bad Rips in seats, if ripped cover with a seat cover
6 Brakes discs and pads, and hand brake must hold,
7 Mirrors inside and out
8 Oil leaks ( hard on a land rover) maybe a good pressure wash before
9 Mud Flaps must be fitted if vehicle had them.
10 Sun visors , must not hang to block vision
11 Heater/demister must work to demist windscreen, not sure about back window
12 Tyre tread and correct tyre size fitted as per manufacturers specs.
13. spare tyre, must be legal if it is used, and secure, I don't think it's a requirement to have one ????
14 Major rust
15 Windscreen depends on how bad its scratched and chipped, they are a little easier on them these days.
16. Seat bolts under floor pan chassis are secure and not loose.
17. operation of door locks/catches, must open and close securely
18. window winders works
19. Tow ball /hitch not fitted to obsure number plate
20. Worn steering or suspension components, ie split or torn tie rods and ball joint rubber boots, loose or excessive play in ball joints or tie rods.
21. uni joints loose
