so lets see... the majority of roads nationwide = 100km/hr speed limit (or lower) = no additional problem.
Driving a passenger vehicle without uprated brakes and lots of towed mass above 100km/hr = a stupid idea. The compounded risk of driving at high speed with a light weight and under-braked (in relative terms) tractor is obvious to anyone wanting to stop, never mind the fuel bill ;-)
Finding a Policeman with the time available to seek out the very infrequent vehicles that might fail this test and then willing to book the driver? = negligible
Net result = a very very very low likelihood that anyone will ever be booked under such a provision unless they backchat or are towing 10 tonnes at freeway speeds or something equally ridiculous.
There are weird and wonderful road laws everywhere, I seriously doubt there is any big brother element at play here seeking to prevent people towing anything that resembles private vs commercial transportation.
Agree, most of the time over 80KPh with 2 tonne on the back of a standard trailer can be unwise, but not saying I haven't done it.
What started the thread is on a recent trip, sitting at 110KPH by the GPS in the D4 without a trailer, I was overtaken by a 200 series LC with a tri-axle caravan. So I went looking for the rules.
(Also a friend, a truck driver, mentioned that several of the mermaid stations in Northern NSW now have the 4.5 Tonne GVM must enter signs. It used to be 12 Tonne.)
