For a short time, around 1970 Mokes were assembled in Port Moresby P.N.G. I remember them being advertised as "the only new car available under $1000."(in P.N.G.)I think they cost $990 or 999. .W.

The Mokes have been made in China for quite some time.

Correct - thanks for that Mark. If/when Victoria tighten the rules again - they seem to turn the screws every couple of years - then the Defender will be gone too. I would imagine that the Defender will cease production before this happens though - Vic have only just had this last raft of chenges so I can't see them re doing them before 2015.

The laws as they stand is why you don't see some of the real povo packs from manufacturers that are available in other states. The most basic model in Victoria if introduced since these laws changed must have the aforementioned features now. I have seen some real disasters of cars in other states that you simply don't see here in Vic.

It used to be only the airbags, then they added ABS, then they added ESP recently.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Its says later down the line air bags will be introduced!

Really so the company behind this can afford to put air bags in a old design like this, when even land rover cant justify the cost for the Defender.

LR could build an airbag system for the Deefer just by raiding the D1 parts bin!

I have seen old Mokes that have been restored for sale around 15k, and its still a old car that will have bigger costs if driven daily, plus a lack of spare parts being made. I don't understand it only being a 1L though I would have expected a 1275cc at least
It bears about as much relation to the original Moke as the current Mini does to the original. Despite the low capacity of the engine, I expect power is way above the original, and with the more modern engine, may even be lighter than the original, despite the roll cage, larger wheels and brakes, and other upgraded equipment.

It lacks the original Mokes major attraction, however - for most of the time it was sold, it was the cheapest car on the market, thus encouraging would be buyers to put up with its primitiveness.

why would anyone spend that much money on a chinese budget (but expensive) copy when you can have a real one for likely less.... Can anyone yell "depreciation" for me. Infact bugger that, you wanted a dinky little toy like that, I'd get a Mehari 4wd.... It would never loose value.

I wouldn't trust the welding. I know who did it.
