I can't stress how important it is to have a bushfire survival plan completed well in advance. They can be found on these links.
Prepare. Act. Survive. for bush fire season - NSW Rural Fire Service
or
Rural Fire Service Queensland - Rural Fire Service
Remember LEAVE early or only stay and defend a PROPERLY prepared property if you are physically and mentally able to do it.
stay safe

Just hope everyone is ok, major fires are threatening several hundred homes so take care.
The State Mine fire (Lithgow) started sometime on the afternoon of the 17th the first line scan showed this fire

The next morning (18th) it was something like this

The speed that these fires moved shows the futility of trying the stop them. In these instances it becomes a "protect the public" effort, a process that is made so much harder when people do not plan ahead. Under conditions like yesterday once the fire is under way it is too late to start thinking about what you need to do, that should already have been planned, and the whole family needs to know the plan. If people get separated they need to know what the other intends to do, and this can only come from planning ahead.
If you haven't done so visit the RFS web site and get a bushfire survival plan. Remember we haven't got to summer yet and the fire season is only 18 days old.

I am at least 150km from the nearest fires (Lithgow), but with the wind round to the SE, we now are blanketed in smoke, nearly as bad as when we had our own fire here in 2007.

Martyn I think we possibly may of met each other yesterday without even realising
The news said that there is one fatality, a 63 years old man :(
This is very sad indeed.
Yeah, the man had a heart attack while defending his home against bushfire at Lake Munmorah, on the south eastern shores of Lake Macquarie.
Stay safe all.
stay safe people....
Just heard, Wallarah House at Catherine Hill Bay was burnt out. This is a heritage listed house built in the 1880's with magnificent views over the beach. It was recently listed for auction at prices around the 2 million dollar mark.:( It was originally built as a mine managers residence.
