I get annoyed when I hear footballers called heroes, when they're just athletes.
A real hero unselfishly takes risks to put others first, I reckon.
For exampe I'm reading a book called 'Kisses from Katie' about an American 18 year old girl from Nashville who went to Uganda for some 'gap year' volunteer work in an orphanage before going to university. She fell in love with the people, stayed, has adopted 13 orphaned girls and organised a new NGO which is raising the money to pay for more than 400 of the poorest children to go to school there.
She gave up her dream of becoming a nurse, had to end it with the boyfriend she wanted to marry and at 20 was the mother of 14 girls and helper of so many others, so much responsibility and it wasn't always easy or glamorous, but she has stuck at it.
She said she couldn't change the world single-handed, but she could change some lives, and that's enough for one person to do.
She made the point that every orphaned child in the world could have a family if more people would just adopt one each.
So, I reckon someone like that is a hero. I recommend the book.
