I have the remains of a 53 series 1 in my back yard and it has the number 18534 stamped in the same place as yours. Regards John
I wonder if any members could help me out. I have a 1953 S1 with the serial number on the chassis in the right place(36661075), however I have found another number on the drivers side, the number is 13080 it is directly opposite the vehicle number. also under the rear of the chassis has been painted white at some stage and we have also discovered discovered a repaired bullet hole in the fuel tank!. My mate seems to think it may be a vehicle that was used in Malaya with the defence force but how would I find out, any ideas? Cheers gunner.t

Hi,
This vehicle was supplied by Grenville Motors, Rover and Land Rover Distributors for NSW.
Chassis: 36661075; Engine no: 36106609; key: 588; STD vehicle (softtop); supplied to: Amos Smith & Sons, a/c Campbell (local agent and customer); date: 8-5-53. The other number is a chassis factory production build number, often these are ahead of or near the "official" chassis number.
There's a start, see if you can find the owners name, possibly property name and tare and aggregate weights on the rear of the guard in front of the driver's door - legal requirement when registered. Most likely a farm vehicle, certainly not a British Military or Australian services one.

Thanks Bob, The engine number matches the one I have in the vehicle, I bought the landrover off a retired farmer who took it over to the coast from his farm at Tamworth. His son was going to restore it but only sanded some of the panels back to bare metal, it has been in an accident and the drivers side mudguard is off an earlier model so no writing, the farmer told me it was on the farm when he bought it and they used it as a paddock basher for years which probably explains the bullet hole. Bob thanks for the info, much appreciated, I will get onto the farmer and see if he has anymore gen for me you never know he might have a photo taken years ago or something. Cheers gunner.t
