Got a sense of adventure ,some time on your hands, and a few grand! Well have I got a deal for you.
If all goes to plan, 2aussiesglobal (us) will be shipping our 130 from Melb to Cartegena, Columbia in June 2014.
Approx cost Melb to Cartegena for a 20' container is US$2300 plus say $1500 plus or minus a bit for port charges the other end. (Don't hold me to these figures there a guestimate based on past experience)
Generally two trucks in one 40' container go cheaper than one in a 20' container. I don't know how much cheaper yet, but according to other Overlander's who do share it is cheaper. We have it the past always shipped alone.
So if you are planning to go to South America or looking to do something different next year this may be an opportunity for us both to save a few bucks!
Why June departure from OZ? It's a good time for us to hit the Amazon (heading south) after the wet in July. It takes about a month for the ship to get to get to Columbia. In fact it takes about a month for a ship to get anywhere.

I would not land in that part of the Continent even under the influence of funny grasses. On the Pacific side Chile will be my selected port of arrival.
Make sure that you do not show any valuable things like cameras or even hunting gear, a cousin of mine and his friend near lost their life life on the hands of corrupted police so they can get all their gear.
I, as an Uruguayan will approach the trip from Chile to Argentina, then Brazil if you do not are interested in visiting Uruguay.
The border between Paraguay and Brazil is very dangerous if you do not travel with a local.

Good Luck, I have heard some horror storeys about that part of the world,friend of mine got hijacked on a bus, they took everything from all the passengers, but I am sure you have done your prep and are aware of the dangers.

Hola! Well no one seems to be particularly interested in South America.
Yes I know of an America who was stupid enough to leave his truck to be put in a container by a third party and had some explaining to do when it arrived back in the US.
At the moment I am following two aussie Overlanders currently touring over there and have followed another two who have recently returned. One being well known travel writer Ron Moon and his wife Viv. They traveled extensively throughout South and Central America and in fact shipped out of Cartegena in Columbia when heading north.
No we can't speak Spanish or Portuguese but neither could any of the other Aussies and Swiss and Germans and Americans etc and they all managed. We have spent a short time in Argentina and Chile before and managed with sign language. And the world traveler now has Google translate.
We have Overlanded through Sub Saharan Africa and also Morroco in the north. Solo vehicle Overland travel can be chaotic, challenging and stressful at times but I would go back in a heartbeat. And I will if I live long enough.
I guess we could stay home in Tassie and keep out of harms way. But I could have also picked the wrong day to visit Port Arthur back in 1996! Things can go to sh-t anywhere, anytime.

Killing to sell organs it is the new business in some parts of Central America Brazil and Mexico.
