If you want to talk about high loads rather than rising loads, it is hard to go past the one in Wellington NSW) about thirty years ago. A local with his backhoe on the back of his truck was, as he had been doing for years, crossing the Macquarie R. on the iron truss bridge. However, it seems that about an inch of bitumen had been added to the road surface, and the backhoe struck and buckled one of the cross braces above the roadway. Slowly enough for him to get off the bridge, the bridge collapsed into a tangled mess in the river, cutting the Mitchell Hwy and dividing the town in two except for a low level bridge, often submerged.

I think the fine is $3000 plus 12 points and the driver will lose his licence and the truck will be deregistered.

The Minister Duncan Gay said they will also go the company for the cost of repairing the tunnel. The truck owner however was very cool with it and said accidents happen, and that the driver had flipped both switches when he was groping around for his sunglasses. He must have a good insurance company as it will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the tunnel.

The NSW government is just jack of dopey truck drivers destroying tunnels.
Only last month one caught fire in the Lane Cove tunnel and a couple of months ago we had the Cootes petrol tanker on Mona Vale Road killing 2. Not a tunnel but similar lack of care /maintenance.

I'd be questioning why he was groping around for his sunglasses when he was about to enter a tunnel.

    Looking for sunglasses?

Maybe he had a rising aversion to the overhead bright lights in the tunnel.

Do you have a source for this, or is it just your expert opinion?
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Yes Kev, and the media reported a substantial number failed the safety audit. Some of the failures were for speed limiters allowing the heady velocity of 102.6 kph and single brake light bulb failure.
