Headed to Adelaide the other day to collect a piano from the Minister for war and finance's grandmothers house. (her grandmother died a little while ago and this piano has been in the family (according to 'legend') since about 1900!).

Whilst there was being helpful where we could, and were asked if we wanted some old tin that was in the shed, went and had a look and this is the old tin...

(These apparently came from a servo that closed in the 60's and moved from the corner of South and Burbridge roads (now called Sir Donald Bradman Drive) The person moved to a servo at the corner of Bagot Ave and Henley Beach Road (also nearby) This servo is now also closed but is a subway restaurant, it is an interesting building as apparently one of the very few remaining genuine art deco service station buildings in Australia... )

I think the signs look like they are from the 30's but it's a complete punt and I wondered if anyone knows anything about them??

There are two shell signs, both have a small amount of relief in the lettering and a red raised and rolled ( 1/2 round ) border... They are two part signs. I believe either side of a rooftop sign maybe?? About 8' -10' when set up??

although much larger and horizontal rather than vertical they are the same style as the tyre signs.

They show signs of time (some rust on an edge etc, some bangs etc) but these are as they were theyve not been washed or even wiped over yet so look pretty good I reckon...enamel is pretty good

and she saved me a few small old eskys to boot!! (to go with the landys

)

Judging from prices I have seen at various auctions, they should be worth about the same as a good, on the road, Series 2a!

Make sure you keep your shed locked.

'Twas a good find/acquisition. Some of these types of things are very hard to get hold of these days. We've recently been through Leeannes dad's house, and some of the old tins we found are awesome. Probably worth next to nothing, but still great to see the old stuff in reasonable condition. Also found an old oil transfer bottle, you know, the ones that used to be at the bowser. Was in excellent condition,, right up until I dropped it

I love that sort of old stuff.
Those signs should be worth a bit but I would keep them.
I only watch two yank tv shows, one of which is American Pickers. Its very interesting and the boys head straight for these type of signs when they spot them.
Talking of spots, the girl with spots, Danielle. Crikey I think I am in love.
The other show that I watch is American Restorations. They do beautiful work on old stuff.

Don't wash them. Don't even wipe them down. The dust & grime they have on them now is like a protective layer. Removing it could lead to more trouble.

Hang them in the shed, out of harms way. I would utilise the screw holes that are in them already, and put cable ties thru them, to eliminate the risk of 2 metals reacting with each other.

Well Chops you dropped at least $70. I have three of those glass oil bottles. Was of all places at a hire place in Bayswater. Owner collects old service station stuff and had few there. This was a few years back now and he said then they were for a reasonable one $70-$100. Crikey did a Ebay search and have a look at this price. Mine are far better than this !

Chops, about that oil bottle you used to see at service stations, we have one and I fill my series III 'zara' with it

I decant the oil from a 10ltr drum

Seeing the price they fetch I had better not drop mine
