Thread: V.W. recall, unusual defect

Whoever is the supplier of the DSG must be losing a motsa over the problems they are having.
It is probably ZF.
I have a friend who just bought a Ford Focus with DSG and she is worried because 2 of her friends who recently bought them are having rough shifts.
She asked me what she should do, and I said IF you have the problem make sure to report it to the dealer in writing.
Sounds like a universal problem. My assumption is that the same supplier would supply VW and Ford.

The Jatco auto in the V6 Freelanders suffered a similar problem with oil causing problems with the electronics.

I bought Mrs S3ute a new TSI Sports with the DSG box 3 years ago and had the dreaded clutch shudder problem almost from new. It went back to VW at least 6 times for checking - most of which got the standard "you're the first to complain about this problem, we've checked it out and it's all within factory tolerance etc etc". Finally, as the warranty was due to expire we were told it was too close to warranty expiry to warrant being fixed. She took her keys to the manager and dumped them on his desk, told him she wouldn't accept it back until it was fixed and demanded a hire car of equivalent status until it was. Three weeks later it was fixed finally - only to receive the official factoryrecall notice 2 days later.

VW's record on this problem has been nothing short of appaling. I won't be in a hurry to buy an Amorok.

Hi Bob,
this is one of the well known issues with the DQ200 transmission. This recall, they replace the synthetic fluid with mineral fluid. They are contributing the fluid to huge numbers of mechtronics failures.

Unfortunately it is not the only issue with the DQ200, they have been famous for over 2 years now for failing fluid pump units (they are electric!!), and clutch issues. If you want to keep in touch, head over to vwwatercooled.com.au forums; AND pls be gentle if you have the little twin charger engine, they are self destructing in high numbers, at least VW are replacing them but quite often only after a fight. This engine and the DQ200 in the Golf vi and polo 6c have give VW a world of issues.

The DQ200 (dry clutch 7 speed), DQ250 (older wet clutch 6 speed unit fitted to tdi & gti, which has been reliable with the exception of a very fiew mechtronics units) and DL500/501 (new wet clutch 7 speed) are made by Borg-Warner.

The heavier duty DSG box for the Bugatti Veyron is made by someone else

Duel clutch transmission in the Ford Focus is made by Getrag.

Something to think about if you are keeping the car long term, there is transmission software updates available which cut down clutch slippage, heat and reduce wear by implmenting a smarter shift logic..

neither is it in the auto - Amarok uses a ZF 8HP45 which is 8 speed torque converter auto like 8HP70 in new Rang Rover just smaller capacity.

I think his comment refers to the appalling customer service from VW – I second that, I'm nearly the worlds biggest fan of VAG cars but VW service is a joke, really the only difference between the Golf and A3 now, you get service with Audi.

I rather suspect the reference might be to VW dealer attitude to repair, rather than vehicle specific failures.

For me personally a VW would not be on my shopping list, and I quite liked the Amarok (test dove one when first released).

The nett result seems to be that Amarok sales are terrible at about 600 per month vs Hilux at 3000 or so.
The full figures are quoted by someone on the Exploroz forum, and are in the latest 4x4 Australia.

This has to be a disaster for VW who have great expectations.

They must have a heap in stock as the tap doesn't turn off quickly.
