I can't see the numbers slowing down in the current international climate, the next flood will probably be from Syria with a repeat of the 70's exodus from Lebanon as the Middle East spirals towards anarchy.
So are where are we going to lock all these people up?

The people that get on boats have money and are basically just jumping the queue and with the amount of boats coming seriously disadvantaged any one else chance of coming to Australia as a refugee. They should immediately be returned to the nearest refugee camp near to where they are from and apply the correct way.
We are just exacerbating this problem by sending the message we will accept anyone and everyone and while there are off shore processing centres, most of them still get here.

One sure way to cut down their numbers is to restrict the amount of benefits they're automatically entitled to. Cut out the baby bonuses for a start.
I've nothing against immigrants from anywhere as I'm one myself, but us and many others went through the right channels to get here.

Lets face it, the people in the detention centre's dont help their own cause by destroying of damaging the accomodation and other things these centre's provide. This would be one of the main things that turn everyday Australians against their cause. We see our tax $$$ getting wasted in repair from people who want us to accept them...NOT A GOOD START....
The system isnt perfect, and sure some are held far longer than they should, BUT, if they arrived her withsome form of ID, they most likely wouldnt be in that situation for as long as they have.

A friend worked at Christmas Island. There were different types of boat people seeking asylum. Lets assume none have documentation proving who they were. There were the types that assisted the authorities in determining who they were. Generally, they were assessed as refugees and resettled. There were the types that hindered the authorities in determining who they were. They sat back and said "let me into your country". Generally, they're assessments are pending and they remain in detention. Time wasters. They are using resources that would be better used on others.
