    look Ma-- no wheels!!!

    http://www.3801limited.com.au/news/

"3801 was lifted at the Large Erecting Shop, Eveleigh, on Monday 7th November to have the driving wheels removed for retyring. The wheels were forwarded to Ipswich, Queensland on Monday 14th November. Planned maintenance work over the summer period will include reconditioning the axle boxes and total expenditure is expected to be over $100,000.00, all funded by 3801 Limited.

The tyres on the main driving wheels on 3801 had worn down to the extent that they had become potentially unsafe to operate. We therefore decided to withdraw 3801 from service until new tyres can be fitted. This work will be carried out by Ipswich Workshops in Queensland and is a major task. 3801 is expected to return to service on the Rail and Sail tour scheduled for 26th February 2006.

Tyres on steam locomotives? These are not like car tyres but a metal band that is shrunk onto the driving wheels and provides the flange that fits over the rails. The tyres can be machined a number of times to maintain a round surface but eventually become thin and need replacing - the same as when the tread on a car tyre becomes smooth. Unfortunately there are no local Bridgestone Tyre centres for steam locomotives in NSW and the wheels will have to be removed from under 3801 and sent to Queensland where specialists are able to carry out the work."

    edit-
actually reading further down the page,,
it appears the future of this famous loco is not too bright--
not only is its "garage" being threatened by urban developement,,
the actual use of the Loco (owned by RailCorp) is under a cloud.

"WE" cant let such an Australian ICON be lost
    Protest NOW!!!
