Laitance on a new slab - how to approach removal/repair?

I'm asking about sealers because I'm not entirely happy with the finish of the slab. I poured a slab myself & used a hired trowelling machine in my last shed & the finish was 10 times better than what I have now.


Apart from the surface being covered in cracks (and some getting bigger with time), the shed is nearly done.


They're still dragging it out though. I thought they'd be keen to get this one over & done with to get rid of me, but no. Tomorrow is 3 months since they started erecting the shed & they've been here about 5 days all up.




Still to do:


Fix corner flashings.
They fitted the 4.2m corner flashings with 3 screws & they flap about in a breeze.


Replace 2 x roof sheets.
They ran out of roof sheets & fitted one of the cover sheets & thought I wouldn't notice. They didn't even scrub out the 'cover sheet' writing. Another sheet was buckled during fitment.


Install 2 x concrete access ramps.

There's also approx. $500 of material (knee braces & ceiling battens) that they haven't used which will be coming off the final bill.




I swear, if Wikipedia had a page on Cowboy Builders, their company logo would be front & centre :angry:.

Well, today was interesting to say the least.


The concreter came out to do the ramps & during a rather heated discussion about their dimensions, it came out that it was my fault the 'new' slab is cracking.
Apparently it's because I wanted another 100mm on top that's caused the cracking on the surface of the 'new' slab.
The concreter even thinks that there was no problem with the original slab & that the new one is worse. Cracking wise, I agreed with him.


Then his offside chips in & says that I caused all the problems with the original dusty slab because I must have driven on it within 7 days :confused:.
He took offence when I told him to **** off (the p word, not the f word).


Things got even worse & I ended up telling them both to **** off (the f word this time) & I'll go back to Fair Trading to have this sorted out.




Anyway, I eventually relented about the dimensions so they're now done so I have 2 x 1200mm ramps in place, and they're covered up because he was worried it might rain...
I sort of regret not standing my ground over the 2m ramps but the 100mm rise over 1200mm looks OK from what I can see.

Scouse, if this was my shed I would be in jail for going postal by now.

I hope you're almost ready to get some use from it!!

So I've requested that they fix the cracks in the 2nd slab...

Nothing wrong with getting straight onto the front foot when it may be someone's fault.

See it all the time and they get away with it. World gone mad.

G'day Scouse,

Well the last we heard of the concrete slab was that the second layer was cracking and the ramps were not the correct dimensions. It is now getting towards the end of May. Are things finished and you have one or two Land Rovers happily sitting on your slab, or does the saga continue?

I'm pleased to say the shed saga itself is over as far as I'm concerned. The ramps are done, the shed floor looks crap but the Bondall has covered up 90% of the surface crazing/cracking. What's visible now will gladly be shown to prospective shed buyers.


I had to go through Fair Trading again just to have the defects sorted out. This took about 8 weeks &, unfortunately, involved contact with the Police after their builder threatened me.




Due to the delays in the building process, Fair Trading have told me that I am entitled to some compensation in regards to my loan repayments and/or interest. Needless to say, the shed company don't think I am so we had another visit to NCAT today. They seem pretty ****ed off with me & don't think they've done anything wrong. In fact, they think I should be very pleased with the outcome.


Somehow, I don't think a shed build should take 15 weeks (not including the 8 weeks for the defects) when they only spent 10 days on site.






My Dad thinks I should just call it quits now but I hate being ripped off by arseholes.
I now have to sort out all my evidence for a hearing at a date to be announced......

It sure has been one protracted exercise for your shed's slab! Hopefully it will all be resolved in your favour shortly. No you cannot let people get away with the crap that they have brought your way. If they realise they can jerk people around and suffer no consequences then they will only get worse.

I hope you have plenty of restorative successes in your shed to make up for the difficulty you have with the shed so far.
