    TD5 Engine

    I found out yesterday that the TD5 in my D2 is the same motor that is in a range of Ford and Mazda vehicles, does that mean I can buy parts for my TD5 engine through my local Ford or Mazda dealer and only have to pay half the price ?

    Unfortunately you found out incorrect info.

    The Defender2.4 and 2.2 are of the same Ford family and are common rail.

    The TD5 is the last Land Rover engine ( yeah yeah I know they are building a new engine plant) and is unitary injection.

    Where did you get the idea that Mazda and Ford parts are half the price?

    Definitely not true in my experience.

    I assume you mean the Ford/ BT50 3.2ltr 5cyl Duratorq engine which we believe is a copy of the TD5 but i doubt anything is a direct fit between the 2 engines.

    I would think that if you have a modular engine family of 4, 5 and 6 , Then they would all share the same bore centres and in general dimensions so that they can be machined on the same equipment..

    I doubt very much that the Ford 5 cylinder is a copy of the TD5 unless Ford took the tooling from the LR factory.

    Well they did own LR at one stage so that would give them access, could also be a variant of a Volvo 5cyl engine again owned by ford.

    Well I would be surprised if it is either Volvo or LR.
    The normal case with modular engines is to develop it from another size and the bore spacings remain the same . The first engine in the PUMA series was the four cylinder in the Mondeo as detailed in the Wiki page.

    The 5 would almost certainly be produced on the same machining line and I would think the bores would be the same distance and the drillings for head bolts etc will be the same.
    It cost tens of millions for the automated engine production lines.

    The current Falcon 4 ltre engine I understand has the same bore spacings as the original 144-170CID from way back in 1960.

    That is also why many larger capacity engines are stroked ( or made modular ie the boring tool has say 5 stations and only 4 are used for 4s) rather than bored versions of the smaller engine as often to increase the bore would mean a new casting AND different bore spacing so new machines would be needed at fabulous cost..

    That is the logical and by far cheapest way to produce a larger engine and what Land Rover intended for the TD5. It was only because BMW had their own high volume 4 and 6 that the TD5 remained only a TD5.
