Yes I am well aware of the issue of Medicare Inelligible patients, before my last promotion I used to run an emergency department.

IMHO, anyone/any company who imports workers on 457 visa, should also provide those workers with health insurance for the worker and their family, instead of shirking their responsibilities just for cheap labour. There are also many companies that do provide such insurance so 457 workers do not all share the same health experiences.

You are also very correct about the nanny state, which unfortunately is often the consequence of political lobbying groups with issues of self interest. The anti-gun lobby for example.

No, look at the dog acts, your dog must not be able to get out of your yard that is law, regardless of fireworks, music, parties, cars back firing etc etc. and not so much about your dog getting out, but about dogs getting out and being lost.
Not condoning the 2am noise, you have a good point there, but at reasonable hours???? Not many places it is legal anymore anyway and if the police can be bothered it can be a significant charge. Even where it is legal you cannot just do whatever you like. As said fireworks are being used now to signal other less savory events, same as shoes on power lines.
The main reason fireworks were banned was due to fires being started and injuries from them.
The main issue I have is there are so many people that forget what we and they did as kids and now want to condemn kids for doing similar. Not for a minute condoning illegal or anti social behavior, but kids need to be let to be allowed to be kids, this is why we have such a problem with depression in our kids at present.

I agree with you on the injuries etc, but maybe in controlled circumstances with an accepted risk they may be ok. There should be compulsory training and an age limit. A bit like dirt bike riding, I love it and there is risks, but should we ban it? Far more people hurt in this manner than there ever was from fireworks and that is the quandary when you see a young kid burnt by fireworks.Most things in controlled circumstance are OK. One of our biggest and most dangerous killers is our trusty car, yet we still drive. The problem as with all things is the irresponsible or uncontrolled or unsupervised use. Also you could be doing everything right in any activity and still get hurt.

Any way Merry Christmas to all, lets just have a safe and happy christmas period and show a bit of tolerance.

Yes we used to have great times on "cracker night" the whole issue of Guy Fawkes and the conspiracy to blow up the King and Parliament seemed irrelevant to us. (These days he would be called a terrorist and sent to Guantanimo Bay or be subject to a drone strike or something.)

So maybe we need to step back a little, perhaps a responsible lighting of fireworks certificate before you could purchase fireworks would be a better solution. However getting back to the start of this thread, as a dog owner, the fireworks do set them off and they don't understand what its about. More importantly, in my district, it is likely to be the people setting off the fireworks that will complain about the dogs barking. They have already reported our Pugs for being viscious bulldogs and even chased one escapee out onto the road to be hit by a car. (After all they were protecting themselves, lest a lick from a Pug will prevent them from entering paradise.)

More regulations doesn't make a better society, but with the stupidity and intolerance of many it may be the only solution. It does however seem to be a want of the politicians to be seen to be doing something about a problem at nil cost to themselves, by giving the Police something else to do and the courts more work.

I like your quote about the pugs.:D So many times have seen stupid people call dogs by incorrect breeds and that just breeds irrational and uneducated fear.
And you are probably right regarding dog barking and we are all fairly hypocritical in some of these ways.
I like bikes but loud dirt bikes and extra loud Harley's scare dogs just as much and are as annoying if not more so than fireworks. In WA it is quite rare to see random fireworks but a lot more common to be woken by the sound of some overweight mid life crisis on a Harley pumping out over 100DB in the early hours of the morning and it does annoy, but I dont want to ban bikes. Or worse there is currently a 200 series Toyota with a stupidly loud exhaust that lives in our area and when it goes past you can not hear anything else.

I am disappointed when people suggest education solves all.
I live in a semi rural town. We are approaching the season when bored young teens and pre-teens get out on their dirt bikes roaring around the streets at 2am. I'd like to see the training session for these inconsiderate trouble makers.

I'm not sorry to see fireworks banned. As a kid, I used to see pictures in the newspapers of Tiddles, someones beloved family pet, with it's face half blown off. Kiddies used to shove crackers tn the pets orifices and, well, you can imagine the rest.
By all means, allow fireworks. Issue licences. Make the licence holder responsible for ALL fireworks happenings in the area. If some cruel child (and there are lots out there) blows Tiddles' face off, the licence holder in the area is responsible whether he knew about these fireworks or not. And an appropriate punish ment should be given. Crucifixion, first offense. Unfair? Do you think what they did to Tiddles is fair?

The ranger, when he came around about the complaint, wanted the offending puppy muzzled. I asked how was he going to achieve that on a flat faced Pug and when the complainant couldn't identify the correct dog the complaint lapsed. They actually identified the most passive of all the Pugs, and that is saying something.

What is a dog supposed to do when people poke sticks over the fence at them? The only defence they have is to bark and bite the stick.

I for one am not condoning inappropriate use, people will do that with or without fireworks, they will use homemade ones and other devices. There are just idiots everywhere the latest here are some indigenous people throwing kittens into freeway traffic on the Kwinana Fwy. A friend had this happen, avoided running over the kitten, picked it up, de-fleaed it and now has it at home.
Most of us are actually responsible enough to use them in the correct and reasonably safe manner (there are always risks). Kids usually get injured by either handling or getting too close.
People had some on the canal last night and we had no issue with them.
