I'd say it is insured, but no policy would cover it being driven where it's illegal to do so, like a beach without a permit.
If it was a Landrover, and he was a member of AULRO, he could have put up an SOS and had a dozen forumites there to pull his rig out before the tide came in.

Not that this this would have been covered, unless you claim the truck was stolen, get the insurance soerted and then not want to persecute the thief
