Thread: Christmas lights banned in Cardwell???

Be ironic if Christmas lights banned in Oz seeing all the supermarkets and department stores in the Middle East including Saudi Arabia were all decked out with red and green bunting and playing Jingle Bells or Ginger Ben Rock continuously on their PAs when we lived there, and I am sure it will be the same now.
Used to drive the Mutawa ( Religious Police) spare but if you listen to Jingle Bells there is nothing about Christ or Christmas in it.

They all sold "Happy Holiday" cards also.

Moslems believe Christ was a prophet and in my experience most go with the flow, except maybe for the nutters.
You may also be shocked to learn that many Moslems like a drink also.

The issue is often not the non christian groups, bu the perception we are offending. Granted there are some that are anti Christmas and my answer to them if this offends you either bugger off to a country that is of your religion base or we ban your religion altogether here.
So sick of the mentality that we cannot offend. The utter rubbish that you cannot even say Christmas anymore and have to say Happy Holidays instead. No Santa in a lot of pageants any more. Santa is not even a religious figure so WTF?
As for Christmas lights, nothing wrong with them but they do attract idiots, we have had lights stolen again this year, what is it with some people.

I was wished 'Happy Holidays' by an American lady the other night. It was the first time I had heard it for real, even though I had heard it on telly many times. It was hard to be offended as she was being so nice in the way it was said, and as my mates and I were sitting in a darkened corner, she couldn't see us well, so I figured she may have thought we may have been Jews or Muslims, so gave a generic pleasantry. I was later wished Merry Christmas by a Muslim friend and two Jewish shopkeepers, which made me smile, but I thought later, how should I have responded to them?

You should have thanked them and wished them and their families health and happiness.

The occasion to wish Moslems good wishes etc is the end of Ramadan or Eid al Fitr.
You can wish them a happy Eid.

Except its a bit late as EID is over for this year.

IIRC it was mid October and the Jewish Hanukkah ended on the 5th December, so offering them greetings for either of those religious days only shown one's ignorance of other faiths.

I think to a normally pedantic reader, one would accept it as a general statement not specific to now.
As Ramadan is well publicised, most will know when it starts and ends.
