Tumut area, sorry only ben thru the once and I came down thru the Brindabella Range.

I know I'm 100mile off but my only recent experience of a quiet place, in a not much trafficed area, complete with 'babbling brook' etc is to your east -- north east of Numarella on the Cooma Road; Berlang

    Images of Nature

In particular, I visited the Big Hole and Marble Arch from a small camp spot called Berlang.

Good luck trying to find a spot on your own near water this time of year.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

During your drive through Bago SF, did you get as far south as Paddy's River Dam?
Can't guarantee that you'd have it on your pat malone but it's a very pleasant spot with shade, good water, plenty of room to camp and a few walks in the area. It is actually on the Hume and Hovell walking track.

You could keep driving down Wagga way and camp on the Murrumbidgee at Oura Beach or Wantabadgery. Always a nice spot under a gumtree.

    A bit of adventure?

Head through Tumut up towards Adaminaby but take the turnoff to Tantangara Dam - you will find good camping away from the great unwashed and if you try, you will catch a trout and if lucky, you will see a few of the best looking brumbies imaginable.

Just be prepared for winds and cold weather. It might sound silly at this time of year but believe me, if the weather closes in you will need to be prepared.

If you don't mind the smell of pine trees, you could cross the tumut river near the police station and head a few kms up the road, you should see a turn off to Lacmalac , pass it, and find the logging road that says to Canberra. turn right to go to Bondo ( it's a pine plantation workers settlement, the road continues off to Canberra a couple of clicks past Bondo ( its literately a blink and you will miss it's only a few shacks. Pass it and you will come to a crossing of the Micalong creek, cross over and take the track on the left and drive a few kms and you should see a couple of river crossings.
Should have the place to yourselves. I used to fish the creek for trout and shoot wild pigs and foxes through out that area. ( I had contacts in the forestry.) Its a huge pine plantation up there that's why I asked if the smell of pines.

It's been a few years since I've spent any time in Tumut - but used to get there pretty regularly when the parents owned the local dry cleaner's business for a while.

I always found that the best place to get a little local knowledge on the best camping / fishing spots was at the front bar of the Woolpack Hotel. Always was a very friendly bunch in there.
    Cheers .........

Ah the pubs in Tumut, The Oriental, Woolpack, Star the RSL, a long long time ago a mate composed a song about Tumut Pubs.

It went " there's five hotels in Tumut town and I've been barred from all, The Oriental, Woolpack and the Star, there's five hotels in Tumut town including the RSL Hall." I think it wasn't too successful on the hit parade because the song only mentioned 4 not 5.
