Defender Etiquette

I understand Defender owners are to wave at each other when they pass. Is this correct?

I tried it t'other day. The other guy looked at me like he was afraid for his life.

What's the protocol then?

- only wave when out of town
- a full-blown GIDDAY MATE!!! while hanging out the window or just a discreet lifting of the hand and eyebrow
- do Defender owners wave to Series owners?

comments, please.

Some do some don't I suppose it depends on the person.

I always give a bit of wave but I don't always get one back.

I dont have a defender but still wave when I see another Landie..
Or even another traveler
I get almost full return waves outside the city, but can drive for 5 hours here and not see someone sometimes.

In the citys I get more weird look than smiles.

But then again They may know me

I'm a waver, m'self.

Sometimes reciprocated, sometimes the reaction you describe.

Copped an Xtreme owner the other day thought he was too cool and when I waved he pulled his sunnies down and accelerated away.

Takes all kinds to make the world, I guess.

Keep it up. I'll wave back, I promise.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Rightio here goes,
The correct Landrover wave etiquette is to casually lift 2 fingers up off the steering wheel (not that way) when approaching an oncoming landy.
Personally i wave at any landy except range rovers newer than my disco. The people who drive these exist in a different realitiy and dont like one of the little people to acknowledge them, sort of like touching the Queen. I also dont wave at mothers driving the disco shopping cart.
cheers

P.S. If its an immaculate series 1 or 2, pulling over to have a quite moment with yourself may be in order At least according to my wife who offered me a hanky when we found Les Hiddens ex county.

Gotta wave, personally, I lift the hand off the wheel and I suppose more show an open hand (I wonder where I picked that habit up from).

As you say, the further away from the city you go, the more often you get a response. Most city dwellers (read gutter rats), tend to look down on you no matter what you drive. Even so, it costs me nothing to wave and as they say it takes less effort to smile than to frown.

Come on with the waves. I remember way back when that you could call up a truck on the CB and get a good old conversation about road conditions etc, these days you rarely get a response at all.

OK. Some form of acknowledgement is in order then.

Especially if one sees an AULRO sticker.

The days of being able to have interesting conversations on the CB are not gone. Still possible, even with the cowardly juveniles that now inhabit the airways.

I always get waves from series owners, never gotten one from a disco, rangie or defender though.

First time I did it with the missus in the car she looked real confused, and when I told her that, no, I don't know that person she was even more confused

I always wave at Defenders. Sometimes not reciprocated, but most often I get a wave in return. I'll also wave at Discos or older Rangies if they look like they get used properly, and aren't just shopping carts.

I'm always in two minds about waving to Series owners. Not because I don't want to acknowledge them, God knows they deserve our undying respect for keeping the old girls in action, but encouraging a Series owner to loosen their grip on the steering wheel, or (Heaven forbid) take one hand off 8O , to return a wave, could make me the cause of a road accident!
