    storms coming, take precautions, brisbane

    SOMERSET, REDLAND CITY and North Stradbroke Island Council Areas.
    Issued at 5:38 pm Sunday, 29 December 2013.

    The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:35 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Nerang, Rosewood, Enoggera Reservoir, Enoggera, the area south of the NSW border, Moogerah Dam, the McPherson Range and Numinbah Valley. These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast. They are forecast to affect Boonah, Strathpine, Redcliffe and Scarborough by 6:05 pm and Samford, Deception Bay waters, Bribie Island and waters off Bribie Island by 6:35 pm.

    Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.


    Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
    * Move your car under cover or away from trees.
    * Secure loose outdoor items.
    * Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
    * Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
    * Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
    * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.


    The next warning is due to be issued by 6:40 pm.

    A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.

    Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at Australia's official weather forecasts & weather radar - Bureau of Meteorology or call 1300 659 219. The Bureau and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

    There was a big hairy one with a black centre rolled over us about an hour ago.

    Lots of hail, it looked like it was snowing at one point! It's been a stinky 41 degrees this afternoon, so a downpour was most welcome.

    My nutty son decided that he was going to go out riding his bike in the rain to cool down.

    Another storm has just been sliding to the west of us, there have been so many lightning strikes, it's been like a constant strobe light on the horizon.

    I wish I had the camera gear and skills to capture pictures.

    It arrived up here near Bribie Is.about 6pm ish a lot of banging and flashing but not a lot of rain.
