I think its great Bob still has a beer and can drink with the boys. Remember Bob actually came from an average background through the Unions when they were worthwhile and was not one of these silver spoon pollies that seem to be the basis now.
The do gooders to be quite honestly can go to buggery. What irks me the most and is still the mentality is it is OK to get smashed on wine and act irresponsibly but the moment you have a beer or a bourbon you are an irresponsible bogan. What a crock. The hard working people that have built this country enjoy a beer.

Don't quite follow the wine/beer bit.

Bit of a thread drift. I think you have been influenced by Bob's propaganda - he and his team were very good at creating an image. He was a career politician. He studied law in WA and Oxford before entering the well trodden path of many of our ALP politicians and his uncle was premier of WA.

To bring us back on topic, I ask the question, why did Bob make the point of not drinking while he was in Federal politics ?

He did not come from an affluent background, Born in Bordertown SA and yes he did study law but was never in practice and came through the Trades unions. The problem with most of our unions now days is it is not fairly ordinary people progressing through or going to uni and then progressing through it is affluent people that do not give a toss about the Aussie workers. At least Bob Hawke kept up the image that he cared about the average worker. Our current crop of pollies could not be further away from that image at present as much as they try to pretend they are.

You have said you dont follow the wine beer bit. Go anywhere if you are sipping a Chardonnay and get smashed then that is acceptable as you are refined and drinking wine, drink beer, bourbon or wine from a goon bag and you are treated quite different (the exception maybe if you are drinking overpriced beer at an exclusive beer garden). Look at our politicians that can be totally out of place and drunk and should have lost their positions drinking wine and barely been reprimanded. If they did that on common beer or bourbon they would have been alienated real quick.

Bob did drink beer for a long time in Federal Parliament but was advised to cut back on health issues and also to restrict drinking by his spin doctors to change his image.

He was also the last real PM to have any sort of affinity with the general public.

I think that Bob H is fine downing a beer, I think no ill of him. But if it had been one of 20, and he'd ended the afternoon face down in a pool of vomit then I'd have thought him a bloody fool and worthy of attention. Control and moderation is my view.

I detest the automatic assumption that hard work=beer, hard play=Beer, and if you don't conform then you are a [insert favourite insult here]. I don't follow that drinking alcohol is a must to have a good time. I've explained to my kids my reasonings, and encouraging them to think hard before feeling the "need" to drink.

If they think that they need to look at the likes of Bob Hawke as a role model, then perhaps I'll need to adopt the "Disgusted of Melbourne" type of attitude, because I'll have failed as a parent.
