About 12 months ago I went out with my mate in his Freelander 2 and meet up with a group of other 4wd's there was a D3 & 4 and just about one of every other make.
After the first corrugated road the complaints from some of the guys of how bad the ride was then the guy in the D3 said, "what corrugations, we were drinking tea on the way down"
Later in the day the Freelander was climbing steep rutted hills that really impressed some and quite frankly embarrassed others.
When we breaked for lunch, a lot of LR myths were put to bed cause all the talk was about the LR products.

I usually deal with these guys by saying something like " yeah, I thought about getting one of those but I'd have to leave most of my stuff behind on a trip" Then get the subject onto GVM and payload.

Maybe you have hit the proverbial nail with 'used to read'. There's Jamie with this 300tdi and Puma which are in just about every issue with a lots comments on 'what a good thing they are'. There is our own Nugget in several issues with this Puma 110 twin cab on his big lap.

Just a quick flick on random mags picked up from my reading room. Issue 207 page 216 - tour of the top end 1975 "We will always treasure that trip, which was made possible by that dear old Landy".
Issue 197 page 171 "The old solid axle Rangies get a bit of a bad wrap sometimes. But they're seriously capable off road."
Issue 196 page 125 BUYING USED - BEST SOLID AXLE 4WDS - RANGE ROVER to 1996, final comment "This model easily holds its place amongst the best live axle 4wds ever made."
Issue 202 page 91 - feature article on two Disco's and their owners.
Issue 205 - Defender on the front cover, page 76 feature article on customised (touring mods) 300tdi Defender. Article comment on Defenders "Without all the frills and gadgets, they'll outlast just about any 4WD on the tracks".

That is from five absolutely random mags grabbed from a pile; positive comments in all five. Perhaps the perception comes not from an anti Land Rover stance but in comparison of how gushy they get over Nissotas; or perhaps Land Rover owners are just a paranoid lot.

I realise smart people (unfortunately not enough of them) in the 4WD world know that Rovers are a good unit despite a few flaws but don't have one for one reason or another, it's the ignorant dead****s in the world who have never owned one that just go on hearsay from what a mate told them, etc..

Through my selling of parts, lot of the people who buy bits off me had mentioned that they had owned Patrol, Cruisers, etc.. and bought a Rangie or Disco. I always ask the reason, they respond most times 'they're cheap to buy, cheap to fix, comfortable and capable'. 'Nuff said

I had a new neighbour move in across the road from me and me and my next door neighbour did the welcome thing of seeing him on the front drive went over with a 6 pack
On talking my Land Rovers came up which point he said. " they are bunch of sh** and should never been sold in Australia or anywhere in the world. "

I was a reserved and said that unlike his Commodore there were sold around the world to the public and army's and not again like his commodore just sold in Australia to people who don't know what a real car is. Shame is was not now with Holder stopping making them in Australia to prove my point.

My next door neighbour was a bit more light hearted and said to him , " well your off his Christmas card list now "

He is not a bloke that likes to speak to anyone in the street and has now changed from a couple of year old commodore to a new Falcon. As I a pom I did not think Aussie men did that.

Commodores are sold around the world.
    The ADF do use Commodores.
My Commodore is the most reliable car I have ever had.

I am an Australian, not a pom. I like both Commodores and Fords. I was surprised when I turned up at a fellow forumites place he greeted me with "I thought you were a Ford man".

The topic of this thread is more about the ignorance and rudeness of the general populace. Some people dislike <insert make of car here> because they are ignorant and they tell you that car is bad because they are rude.
There are some that do it for a **** stir.

Not a Top Gear fan then. When Jeremy, Richard and James tested it, they all loved it.
It's marketed as a Vauxhall there.
