These checks are good, should be more of them.
They would be catching a lot of camper or box trailers over 750 with out brakes, and caravans over their GVM. Some caravans can only carry 250-300kg before they are over, and they will have 90kg most times 2x90kg of water - couple bags of cloths & food and it's over.
And lets face how many camper trailers are under 750kg loaded? I would say nearly zero - the tent alone is 240kg on mine, add 90kg water, slide out kitchen complete with kit, all the gear under the bed, gas bottle, decient chassis & alloy body and the weigh bridge says 1080kg.
BTW, to get your camper legal for over 750kg, it must be complianced after the brakes are fitted - they check based on compliance plate. In QLD, if you register it with a GVM of 1040kg the rego $ is the same as you are paying now. Over 1050 it is more than double. You will notice <1050 has the small number plate (2 letter + 4 number) >1050kg has the large number plate (3 letter + 3 number same as car).
I assume 1050kg is used because the old rules were centered around 2250lb. 1050kg gives a bit of leeway so old gear built under the old 2250lb rule still complies.
They sometimes set up at the boat ramps and have a field day, the number of boat packages put together by dealers that either go over 750kg or 2000kg once you fuel and load up is amazing.
As above, I use the tip, but don't bother with Brisbane city, I go to Redlands (Birkdale), they only charge if you need a certificate.
