I love a beef stake but not with hormones

I was under the impression that hormones (steroids) were not longer legal in Australia, but I was wrong
We lost a big market today because our meat have Trenbolone acetate which it is banned in many countries due to its nasty side effects.
I hope that the meat that we consume here in Tasmania is free of that.

There has got to be better ways than to drug everything to make it 'better'. Humans cannot see when things should just be left well alone, natural. It does not surprise me that there is so many medical problems these days that never existed 50 years ago.

I suspect that our agricultural 'science' and vet. medicine closely follows the US...which is heavily influenced/bribed/lobbied by big Business. Not only the pharmaceuticals, but beef factory business. I'd say 'farmers', but the way most American cattle are grown in concrete-floored sheds and fed on factory-produced edible substances... bears little resemblence to what a FARM or cattle ranch used to be.
Some folk would say that the US agricultural lobby is as powerful as the 'Military-Industrial Complex'

We're fortunate over here in WA. I understand it's still possible to buy grass-fed beef. You know, the stuff they're used to eat, and grow properly with a nutritious balance of protein/fats etc.

If you accept the Evolution Theory as good Science, then you're going against good Scientific practice to endorse forced alteration - less than 100 years -to Feedlot diet, when the current one (grass) is the culmination of millions of years of fine-tuning...
By taking the Creationist viewpoint, well, you're messing with the original specifications and the Designer..... Either way is not healthy !

    Now let the fun begin......

PS, when feedlot animals are fed 'factory' food and high % of grains which in the US is invariably GM corn, you've got the added whammy of GM toxins and glyphosphate plus it's mates being carried through the food chain... right into your own intestines. What that does to your own gut bacteria is another thing again...

Homegrown lettuce anyone? - or backyard chooks fed on lettuce ???

Yes agree. Definitely not a good thing. However, feedlots, growth hormones, other chemicals and genetic modification are all consequences of having to feed an ever increasing population with finite resources, and meeting the price and product demands of the buying public.

I would not agree with that, I think that greed it is the major factor.

Eating properly cooked wild harvested venison, goat or kangaroo meat is a healthy alternative that avoids additives

(but you have to be a DIY type of person)

And whose greed exactly? The struggling farmers working 80 hour weeks? The supermarket giants with responsibilities to their their ma and pa retiree shareholders? Or the buying public who don't want to pay $50 a kilo for steaks?

Rarely are there simple, easy answers - particularly with something as complex as the agricultural industry. But simply identifying greed as the main problem diverts resources from finding potential solutions that could make the industry work better.
