But still need a mortgage for petrol
Look on the bright side. When you return Australian petrol will be so cheap.
Your I.P address is possibly not helping. Change it to UK.
Hi superquag , I was in the UK. a few months ago, and will be there for 8 weeks this summer . The best way to travel around is hire a car , look on the Internet ,you can get prices from here and book from here . We had a small Vauxhall hatch did loads of miles cost sod all for fuel . It is a great place to visit ,and very easy to get around with an excellent network of roads . If you like history you will not be disappointed with York . As for Ashcroft Transmissions , they are in my home town of Luton , about 30 miles north of London , that is quite a long drive to York If It is a first time go through some of the smaller villages , and stop to look around , plus try some warm pommy beer . Have a great time .

You've never seen me on a bike....
Not visiting the Biggest Smoke at all, the plot is to make First Contact with some long-lost family members. - A few hours all up over a few days should look after that.............. the rest of the time being recovering from jet-lag and random sight-seeing.
Or the meetings may go well... either way, travelling light (Wife stays home) allows instant itinery changes.
At this point I'm tentativey looking at around $200 per day for fuel/accommodation.
Sound possible?
PS, the Old Man was a ship's Captain, hence the 'Interesting' Family structure..![]()
Know this is a few days old now however thought this might be of use for hiring a car. http://www.arguscarhire.com/car-hire/uk.html Have used them many times and found them competitive. Also check out the airport car hire rates. I have found Europe Car at Leeds Bradford airport very good on price.
Look around and find some insurance to cover the hire car insurance excess. They have been hiking this over the last few years to where some are now £1.5k. Make a big hole in anyones budget if you need to claim on the insurance with this level of excess.
There are policies available which cover the insurance excess in full and provide cover for the bits left out of the hire car company policy like - tyres, glass, roof and under the car. You need to take this cover out in Australia before you leave. Is normally for 12 months however cost has to be measured against the daily rate from the hire company for a policy which covers less. For 10 days think you will find this cover far cheaper and it covers more.
The four of us shared the cost of a Ford Focus diesel for three weeks when we were there two years ago and it was giving 1000kms to a tank, so it worked out quite economical. As for accommodation, get a bed and breakfast guide as there are thousands of them. Then haggle a bit. Also try youth hostels as some of them are quite good. Allow for the fact that breakfast is included, so eat up in the morning and then skip lunch. By Aussie standards, the distances are not really that long. Avoid peak hours and we found the roads to be fine. Be prepared for the fact that their coffee is mostly carp.
mmmm
we are doing a short trip over there in April, family thing
we have investigated hiring a car from a local place, seems very cheap compared to Avis and the like.
Dont know about fuel costs.
Every time i go over, people ask one way or another is fuel expensive, whats he exchange rate etc . I don't know and I dont care either, its too different to compare, why is a D4 so much cheaper there, not shipping, shorter delivery and no luxury car tax, its not an apples for apples comparison.
When I go, I have this amount of money and this many days. i know some fixed costs and after that I spend when there is something, save when there is nothing.
For the first time I shall have to pay for some accommodation and for that we are looking at chain of places that have a motel near by.
Sorry that doesnt help you exactly, just relaying my experiences

If I were to do this sort of a trip, I'd work out the car hire and then drive everywhere on every back road I could manage. After all, you may as well see the country itself and not the motorways. There's no point in rushing around if you don't have to.
Or maybe just get a boat?![]()
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
Hire a car from Australia via one of the online sites before you leave. We had a VW Golf for 30 days cost us $613 total. Don't worry too much about fuel the little cars hardly use any (VW did 5 litres per 100 kms) and the distances are small. B&Bs or small hotels are best value for accom. Booking.com is your friend. Easy driving if you avoid the big cities.
