Boat trailer to Cape York?

What are the chances of taking a standard boat trailer (and small tinny) to Cape York and back and it staying together in one piece. Was thinking of replacing the axle with a solid square one, and changing the wheels to 14" rims and AT tyres with Falcon hubs instead of the small HT hubs it currently has. Would also fit axle under springs for increased ground clearance.

What do people think?

I think it'll break.

Standard trailers HATE corrugations.

Hate 'em.

Really.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

The only trailers I've seen up the Cape were the off-road ones, although the locals seem to have "normal" trailers (I think) ... go figure.

But for a Cape trip I'd say forget it. Things tend to go all rattly on the c..c..c..c..c...c..c...c....corrrrugations 8O

Then there is no chance of taking one on the OTL only on the by-pass roads which are long stretches of corrugations, dust and no fun...

Did I mention the corrugations?

It is possible. Do the springover conversion as youve said, get every joint welded and strengthened, fit decent tyres (ford hubs and just falcon rims), cary spare bolts and tie everything down ubber tight. Youre boat is at the biggest risk. if it can rub or bounce on any fitting including rollers itll split the hull. Make sure it is tied down to the trailer reel tight including the outboard.. Possibly carry a spare set of springs (one side should do). That gets me between Mt Isa and Burketown but i cant speak for the actual cape. Generally towing on corrugated dirt roads is just to be avioded if at all possible. Its very common to see cartoppers up here for this reason. Ive thought about buying a little cartopper for the gulf trips but some of those mud geckos get reel big and theyve got a funny look in their eyes.
cheers

I would have thought it was easier to take a boat trailer (modified for ground clearance etc..) up the OTL than a offroad camper trailer. For a start, it's only a fraction of the weight of a CT, especially if I stow the outboard in the car. It would be light enough to pick up and throw back on the track.

I believe plenty of people take their CT on the OTL (or part of it) without too many dramas.

and I believe that one day everybody will own a Land Rover.

Seriously though, I wonder whether a very light trailer might not be worse on corrugations as it might bounce around a lot more :?:
