Obviously, the suggestion of outlawing "cash only" came from someone who lives in a city. If you did this, you automatically make it impossible to run a small business in a place that has no fixed phone line and no mobile coverage. Believe it or not, there are many places in Australia (in fact most of the area) where this is the case.
And as pointed out, for small businesses that have few or low value transactions, the costs charged by banks are prohibitive. This would apply especially to short term enterprises such as, for example, the craft shop run each Christmas by the local craft people here.

I'm a small business owner/operator. I don't have EFTpos facility and 98% of my payments are cash.
All my income is accounted for and NOTHING goes straight into my pocket. It'd be very easy to abuse, of course. But, if I did, then I'd be dishonest and I'm man enough to know that I have a moral obligation to do the right thing.
When I ask customers if they'd like a receipt I have many who say "Don't worry, mate. Stick this in your skyrocket." I always make a point of telling them I don't do that but thanks anyway.
I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet at all. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.
Just because something can be abused doesn't mean that it will be.
I carry a selection of cash and a credit card and proffer which ever the merchant prefers. I don't pay ATM fees as I plan ahead or if caught out get a decent hunk of cash out so the $2 is less bother than a flea bite. You pay the fees to the retailer/banks in a roundabout fashion anyway.Quote:

Something shonky was going on there. I bet the yard owner never saw that grey nurse and the sale paperwork was doctored so the salesman could pocket it. I had a used car yard and also worked for manufacturers and dealers. Every sale at a car dealership is for "cash" whether from you or your money lender. The car does not leave the yard until it is paid for or finance clearance given by the lender.Quote:

Bah. Sounds to me like there are a lot of vested interests out there knowingly pocketing cash already (except Korg of course). I am not saying outlaw cash either. Let some "creative accounting" continue but stop the big blind take that a lot of these businesses are doing. Discriminating against the other types of tender probably is a very good indicator of who is not doing the right thing. And everyone knows it (except Korg of course).
BTW, most of the people I see behind the counters with Cash Only signs seem to be of foreign descent. Mostly Asian (inc. Indian/Paki/Sri Lanka) and/or Middle Eastern. In the past this activity and these types of business were run by Europeans (Greeks, Italians, etc.). They are all now sitting pretty in retirement with 5 or 6 houses each and assets and cash coming out their ears... Come on now why should that whole cycle of cash grabbing and tax avoidance be allowed to repeat?
Lighten the load on the tax system by making everyone pay their proper and fair share. Stop concentrating wealth into the families of dodgers and cheats.
It just erodes the overall integrity and honesty of our society and fosters an attitude of "Bugger you Jack I'm OK".
Suuure! I was purchasing the vehicle (an unwanted trade-in) off the yard owner, drove off with the car on a trailer with the sale document fully filled out. Not all used cars dealers were shonks, even then! In fact, this one's so honest he's still trading 30 years later!:pQuote:
