CASH ONLY SALES - Version 2.0!

Today 'cash only' retailers are pretty much confined to places like small food outlets.

for most other places not having eftpos available means loss of sales as most people don't carry large sums of cash around anymore.

I once worked at a tavern which didn't have eftpos because the owner had a bad credit rating.
every week the place would loose $100's on potential sales and every week...

it sounds silly to force all business to have eftpos available though.
Sure it might stop the odd cashy here and there but over all it won't make a difference and we have much bigger problems to worry about...

Not at all, and I agree 100% that not every cash only business is 100% (or even close) clean on how they declare their earnings, but to stop the ones that do it, you would need to impose laws that effect everyone - even the ones doing the right thing. Now do we really need even more regulation over small business?

Without going into the politics of it too much, a Conservative Government are pro buisness and I doubt in a pink fit would look at introducing legislation that negitivly impacts most businesses that do the right thing to catch out the ones that are rorting the system.

I suppose its all about trying to get the balance right between the cost of collecting the extra taxes versus what income you would actually see from them.

I'm with you all the way about people paying what they owe like we all have to, but I don't think there is a simple answer to doing that, and I don't think banning cash only in busieness would solve anything. The Tax department are tasked with ensuring people are living within their reported means, so anyone that runs a crappy choke and puke that owns 5 or 6 houses would be an easy target for the ATO.

Bah. Sounds to me like there are a lot of vested interests out there knowingly pocketing cash already (except Korg of course). I am not saying outlaw cash either. Let some "creative accounting" continue but stop the big blind take that a lot of these businesses are doing. Discriminating against the other types of tender probably is a very good indicator of who is not doing the right thing. And everyone knows it (except Korg of course).

Lighten the load on the tax system by making everyone pay their proper and fair share. Stop concentrating wealth into the families of dodgers and cheats.

It just erodes the overall integrity and honesty of our society and fosters an attitude of "Bugger you Jack I'm OK".

I think their prosperity comes from the fact that efforts in their home countries that barely support life give them good disposable incomes here. Also, aside from the parents working seven days a week (so we can buy a litre of icecream at 10.30pm on Sunday) after their children finish their homework they work in the shop. Its easy because they live upstairs. When the kids get married yes they might have enough to buy them a house outright (because they've never had a holiday in Bali or Hamilton Island). The immigrants (first generation) that I know LOVE Australia and are just as honest as anyone else.

The thinking people are already in the Cantina Bobby boy! The rest of the clan seem ok to put up with others rants and add their opinions. Hell they even tolerate unrequested and (mostly) unwarranted cut & pastes. I would say thieving others words shows a lack of highly functioning grey matter more than thinking and sharing ones own theories and opinions. Waffle plagiarism I would call it.

What about places that refuse cash?

TAFE for one, nil cash on premises, ask them why though and you get blank stares. But try to pay for a parking permit, $5- by EFTPOS and they say "minimum $10-".

WTFBBQ?

If your really worried about the tax system take a look at the "dead beat dads" who will only work for cash or the unemployed who do the same I get at least a call a day from people who are quite open about it they ask for casual work then ask if I can pay cash so the ex doesn't find out or they are on pension and don't want to lose any of it . It happens on both sides of the fence.:(

Apparently shops must accept legal tender BUT they can choose the payment method. The consumer has the right to walk. I know that in some instances such as TAFE that we don't have many (any?) other options. Hopefully they don't charge a fee as that would be a bit much.

Going cashless is a big money-saver of such an organisation. No need for banking or security. I don't think they hold petty cash anymore either (mostly).
