    Why the question, Vlad?

Stacks of folks that I know have auto TD5 Discos.

It's like a match made in heaven - the torque converter on the autobox masks the inherent turbo lag so it's an ideal combination.

Seriously, if Land Rover Australia imported the Defender 110 with an autobox, I'm there in a flash.

    Sadly not.

Yep, picked up a new TD5 with ACE about a month ago. Have never had an auto or a diesel before and now I don't know why I didn't try one earlier. So effortless, so smooth.

    Best combination by far IMO.

    Cheers,

Yes. I can't convince the wife that a classic rangie is the way to go but she IS partial to the odd Disco.

A V8 would be nice (I can hear Pedro's gasp of surprise from here !) but the fuel economy of the diesel.... (it would be a daily driver to work - a 40 minute drive or so)

anyway I was looking for feedback of TDI auto Disco owners:
    how does it go,
    what year do you have
    what should I look for
how much do (good ones) cost
    etc etc etc and etc.

97 tdi auto, about 1000+ kms from a full tank, a little underpowered till the boost kicks in, anywhere from $20,000 - $25,000 for a good one of this vintage. Damn nice vehicle but if they offered auto defenders i would have one of them. Maybe your wife would like a sexy short wheel base defender. they do exist but theyre a bit thin on the ground.
That said the discos auto diesel's probably a little bit more sluggish than i would have liked for city driving just down low when pulling into traffic etc. Thats not a problem up here though so it dosent bother me.
    cheers

yeah too much $ i'm afraid. Carpoint has them at around $20K for 96-98 models... and none have bullbars or spotties or anything really.

Ii was hoping to pay NO MORE than $15K and someone told me the 'late 94' onwards are the way to go.

    any comments ?

Can definately be done, what youd be looking for is the very last of the 200tdi's. A very nice vehicle and basically the same as the later ones except for a few styling type thingys. Watch the gearbox and timing belt problems as widely talked about elsewhere in the forum. The last of the 200tdi's are getting cheaper because of the whole keeping up with the joneses philosophy.
    cheers
