    Drivetrain Backlash

I have a Disco V8i S1 1998. I had new suspension put in 3.5yrs ago which I think gave me a bit of a lift maybe 30-50mm I think this might be the instigator of my problem. It drove great after putting it in but I am having a problem now which 3 different mech shops can't put their finger on. I am getting a backlash somewhere in the drivetrain. It is random & unpredictable, can happen at any speed going straight or turning. I describe it as a gadoonk gadoonk cause thats what it sounds like & it happens as a pair of knocks. So far my process of elimination has involved checking all uni joints all are Ok. Removing front shaft & driving it locked it remained. Removing rear shaft driving it locked it didn't happen but I can't be sure it wouldn't have I only drove it about 20Ks & I have had periods where I have driven it for over 100Ks without it happening. I have checked the hand brake & had it adjusted all looked Ok. Drained transfer case & inspected all looks Ok no metal fragments signs of ware or excess play. Checked rear diff for metal fragments & signs of ware all was Ok. Last thing my mech said the next thing he would look at would be the half shafts. I have spent around $500 now investigating I cant keep going on like this. Im hoping somebody knows what is causing this. Help please.

My first port of call for these noises are in the following order - A frame balljoint, A frame bushes, trailing arm bushes ( both ends ), front radius arm bushes.
If they all check out then most likely to be in the transfer case mainly the transfer gear.

Thanks for your info. I have had the bushes looked at but the mech says they look ok but until you take them out you cant really tell. I forgot to say I had suspension done 3.5yrs ago which I think gave me a lift (I know major point! somehow I thought I had but only realised I hadn't rereading it) I thought most likely the transfer too but the mech seems pretty confident it ok. I just read something about rubber donut in rear shaft do you know anything about this? Cheers

Check back lash in rear diff lift rear wheels of the ground and maybe even disconnect drive shaft from rear diff n spin the diff drive flange measure the lash before wheels start turning .go back n forth etc n that way u can see if each wheel turns separate I.e. see if half shafts are driving the wheels ....but I think it's actual diff lash imho ....good luck

They will all have a bit of backlash in the drive train because of the constant FWD.You can find a little bit in everything from the drive plates on the axles in.
