Maintenance

Maintenance is sooooo important, particularly when the vehicle is used for what it was intended.
Wife going to work last week.... crunching noises from back end so a trailer ride home for the RR.
How long since I've checked wheel bearings??? no noises so I don't bother, well it all caught up .... LH wheel bearings seized through water ingress so now the old girl has had her complete back end removed will now weld up the oil leak in the diff, replace both stubs and wheel bearings, all bushes and shockie rubbers and RH axle that is ready to give way. All ready for the winter mud campaign.
She looks forlorn sitting in the driveway without her 2 back legs!
I guess if I had kept on top of it I wouldn't have lost 2 weekends.

Yup, maintenance is so important for keeping our Landies on the road.

I tend to be very good and efficient with the engine oil changes but I keep neglecting to check the transfer case and the front/rear diff oils.

There isn't much else that I tend to do with the Discovery. I would take it to the car wash and hose down the front radiators - its amazing the amount of crap that ends up stuck in the radiator fins. I've seen a KJ Jeep overheat due to dried up mud in the radiator. Now that's got to be such a challenge to solve - where in the bush can you find a high pressure water hose?

Anyways, back to the point. I check the spark plugs every 40,000kms now, even though these are "regular" plugs, not the platinum ones. The NGK spark plugs are great!

Can't check the wheel bearings on the Discovery Series II, unfortunately, as these are sealed for life. But I do take the grease gun to the nipples every once in a while.

Rover on, dudes!

I Agree. My dealer does my servicing and I have no complaints with them at all. I also give the Disco the critical eye after an outing. 8)

Hi Richard
You reminded me of a 2a shorty I once owned,my missus was driving thru paddocks collecting firewood and giving the dogs a run when the landy stalled and skided to a halt.I went to retrieve it,the back end was siezed solid, couldnt get the axles out so I dropped the tailshaft and did a 2km front wheel drive burnout along the gravel rd home. When the sump plug was removed out came toothpaste style EP90 and a lot of water!!!!,the result of playing in a flooded creek crossing a month earlier. If only I was up to scratch on maintence.
Im off with my bro(he finally sorted his brakes, all LANDY now!!!) and a couple of the stumpers on the powerline track on the weekend.
All the best

Have fun on the powerline track Andy, yes, going through deep water and the type of 4wding we do neccesitates regular maintenance or else the price is paid!
The back end will have a complete "makeover", then the front end.

Had my front left wheel bearing dis-integrate on the F3 near Maitland on Saturday. Talk about fun. After a 4 1/2 hr return trip back home, I replaced the bloody thing using basically a screwdriver and hammer. I didn't have a socket large enough to undo the wheel bearing nuts! Wheel bearing (outer) was in about 10 different pieces, and the only way to get the hub off was with a hammer. Talk about fun. Got it back together with the adjustment done with the screwdriver and hammer, spent Sunday on Stockton and drove it home to Windsor. Will be rebuilding the front hubs tomorrow, as well as the tyre that decided to roll off of the rim too!

You've just reminded me, I must get a socket/box spanner for the hub nuts, I've always used a stillson but I really should do it easier.
I had the same problem and had to use the knockometer to remove the hub.
