    Bush Camping in NZ near Auckland

    I'll be in Auckland for 2 weeks in late march for work and I'm wondering if you can camp like you can in Australia in state forests.

    I plan on doing a bit of exploring over a weekend. I'll have a hired RAV for transport. It's no landy but hire cars are quite capable, so I should be able to head into the bush without to much drama.

    I plan on bringing my swag over and buy some cheap camping gear and a chilly bin, better than staying in my hotel over the week end.

    So any info on some sites I can camp over night around 3 hrs from Auckland would be appreciated.

    If your in the state forests or National Parks then no real problem, as usual its more just a case of knowing where the good spots are. Pretty much the same as Aus. The only issue you may need to watch for, are hunters. Depending on where you go and how far in, you may be in hunting areas, which typically involve hunters getting permits, so DOC/PArks &REc know there are not two hunting parties in the same area. Check with DOC website, Department of Conservation here.

    Thanks for the link, your right about knowing good spots to camp though. I prefer not to stay in camp grounds.

    I am not affiliated with or a member of the Land Rover Owners Club of Auckland (LROCA) but they may have a trip planned that'd coincide with your timing or be able to put you in contact with some like-minded Land Rover owner who'd happily advise an aussie on where to go...

    Coromandel gets my vote. Keep it in mind that traffic woes leaving Auckland at peak traffic times can chew into time budgets.

    No land rover no play for LROCA which is fair enough.
    Corromandel looks like a good spot to explore only a couple of hours from Auckland.

    FWIW - It might be worth having a quick look at a couple of DoC sites. Although technically a camp site, some of them can be very basic.

    Just got back to Auckland from a 1100 km weekend trip. I headed up to Cape Reinga. On the Friday night I camped in a clearing in pine plantation near Dome forest.
    Then headed up to Ahipara in Northland to see if I could drive the 90 mile beach. Considering I end up with a FWD 2lt CX5 and no recovery gear I was a bit hesitant. I stopped to pick up some some beers and fuel at $2.20 NZD a litre and asked the bloke where the entrance to 90mile beach was (this guy was useless He just kept saying have you got a 4wd.

    Any way I found the entrance myself, Kaka st. after sussing the situation I saw old mate. I asked him what the conditions are like and if there is any major stream crossings. He was like you'll be right nothing major. He told me how he's towed a few people out but it because the just idle in and don"t keep any momentum up. So I aired down 90 sec of air from each wheel (I had no pressure gauge) turn of TCS auto to manual select and entered the sand. Wow this is the longest distance of beach driving I've done I got up to Waitapu Stream and found the exit Old mate had told me about but He said its be few years since he's exited there and anyway the farm that you drive through had locked gate so I had to go all the way back to Te Wakatehaua Island to find an exit. (getting a bit worried as the tide was coming in) I must of ended up driving around a 110km on the beach.





    The second night camp was on stream off a dirt road heading to Puketi forest. Some massive Kauri Pines in there.


    This Kauri must be 1.5 mts radius

    It was I good weekend I crammed a lot of K's in.
