 i hope you dont have a rule of thumb problem on your hands , that is as you start replacing broken with new ,it seems to work its way down the line of power flow :? 8O
Well, it took 2 weekends but the back end was completely removed and overhauled.
Replacements included all suspension bushes, RH axle which was close to having a dual personality, both axle stubs and bearings/seals and a new set of brake pads. Also the leaky diff cover was welded.
Should last another season................
In a month or so the front end...................

so do I, the transfer case was done last year but I will need a new ZF soon but as I said before if the maintenance is kept up it is cheaper in the long run, that is except for time. I have the belief that if I do most work myself I will know where the weak links are and can plan on sorting out any problems before they pop up.

I agree ,that doing all your own work, where possible, is more cost efficient ,and also being your own vehicle one is more likely to spend more time(time is $ as we all know!) and effort in giving the vehicle the good once over and checking everything ,including all the twenty cent items that most mechs dont worry about ,as its not worth it, wait till it becomes a major job and brings in more $$$$$and besides ,most time when you have a disturbing rattle or clunk ,it NEVER shows up when you take it to the mechs, making them think your a raving looney and know nuffing!
Hi Richard
I have to check my diffs gear and transfer boxs for water after parking in a puddle for a while on the powerline track!!!!
Will be building an overdrive from a couple of used ones I have bought and need to put some shims in the intermediate shaft of the transfer case. One of the freewheeling hubs is dripping so there is a bit of a look needed there.Should keep me busy for a while.

Hi Andy,
Have you got efficient breathers on your Diffs? I wonder if they can be put on transfer cases, I know my ZF has one but not the tranny case.
That will keep you busy, the back end gave me 2 weekends work.
