Fire walls (of the virtual kind)

So I have my new notebook computer (through Dell and impressed with the whole experience from order to delivery).

The nicked one was a Toshiba and very good.

The issue is that the Toshiba came with XP Pro and without additional internet security. I never had a problem with pop ups ads etc or the dreaded invalid session on this site.

The Dell with XP Pro came with Norton Internet Security (3 month trial). The problems start here. I turn off the firewall and I am besieged with pop ups and various other unwanted intrusions. Tonight I get the dreaded invalid session whilst posting. Fixed that via explorer settings.

I smell a rat in Norton and get the feeling that those who send out the unwanted material must look for Norton and if it is off go for it.

Am I being paranoid?

I can recommend from experience - get rid of the Nortons. It's nothing but a pain in the proverbial, and if it breaks, it really breaks, and normally takes the rest of the system down with it. I've had a few clients ring me because they've installed N.I.S., and all of a sudden their computer reboots to a bluescreen, and there's nothing they can do.

I've spent hours on the phone to Symantec, and followed all their instructions to remove N.I.S. Still blue screens on boot. It seemed to have corrupted multiple essential windows files. Even the repair option of the Windows XP setup had issues with repairing it.

Download Zonealarm, or Blackice. Much nicer programs, easier to configure and use, and they don't have the same habit of screwing your system over as Nortons does.

For the pop-ups, download and install Adaware, &/or SpyBot Search & Destroy. They should kill any nasties that get in there when you're not watching.

Cheers

Macca

Thanks for that Macca.

I had a similar experience with an office network a few years ago, I uninstalled the offending product (some bloke with his shirt sleaves rolled up and his tie loosened) and I was then able to get on with my day job.

It is now uninstalled but I fear that I will need to create a new login and discard the old to avoid the now corrupted personal settings. My sons personal settings are clean and devoid of DR_S.exe and other dubious processes.

spybotd 1.3 and adaware are your friends.

cwsshredder is your friend.

securityfocus.com is your friend.

dell's are dell's, its like buying a lotto ticket.

i much prefer powerbooks these days.. truly awe inspiring bits of gear but you really need to buy the applecare pack when you get one as they are like the dell's, good when you get a good one, bad when they aint

and to top it off, wait till you see the next version of OSX.... the preview was truly amazing... ichat was astounding.

Your not the only one , I wouldnt even install a Norton product on my mother-in-laws computer

You might as well install a virus, same thing, takes over the whole machine.

I dont have a problem,,, but I am an end user/consumer
it updates every 3 days or so,
it DOES cover viruses from around the world,
its pretty cheap "up to date" insurance,

I'm sure our Techy friends will advise from their perspective

I think the BEST thing is to use ANYTHING other than MS explorer,,,,

can reccommend Firefox for internet and thunderbird for email,,,

jump in any time inc,,,,
