<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Permanent 4-wheel drive - Mark Rumsey
Early models were indeed permanent 4WD, of a sort. Drive to the front axle was via a freewheel, such that drive was taken up at the fron when a rear wheel slipped, a bit like the freelander except the other way round. The ring pull was to lock the freewheel up for off road work, as in reverse or on overrun, the front axle was effectively not connected. I can't remember exactly when, but the freewheel was deleted in favour of the familiar part time set up of later models, but the ring pull was kept to engage the front axle for a year or so, the yellow knob following that.
