Stage 1 all had front vents. All "traditional" Landrovers have front vents except very early 80", County Trim 110 (and 90) fitted with aircon, and Defenders post-2007.
Revised timeline of "traditional" Landrovers. (minor variants and models rarely seen not included)
1948 Rover company introduces Landrover. one model, 80"
1954 Wheelbase increased to 86", additional 107" model introduced
1956 Wheelbase increased to 88 and 109 in anticipation of new engines
1957 2.0 Diesel available
1958 Series 2 introduced - restyled, new 2.25 petrol engine based on the diesel. All previous models now called Series 1 retrospectively
1961 Series 2a introduced diesel engine increased to 2.25, otherwise little change.
1968 Six now available
1969 Headlights move to mudguards (date varies depending on where assembled)
(1970 Rangerover introduced)
1972 Series 3 introduced - minor changes to Series 2a, mainly revised dash.
1979 Series 3 Stage 1 additional model - 3.5 V8, later ( Australia only) 3.9 Isuzu. Introduces flat nose - all previous Landrovers had the radiator recessed.
1983 Series 3 109 replaced by coil sprung 110. Styling unchanged, but major mechanical and chassis changes.
1984 Series 3 88 replaced by 90 (but not sold in Australia)
1989 (Discovery introduced) "Traditional" Landrovers needed a new name because of the decision to use Landrover as a marque name not a model name, so the 90 and 110 were renamed Defender. New engine (200Tdi) same as Discovery (The old four cylinder petrol and diesels remained, soon enlarged to 2.25 but not in Australia)
2007 Significant changes to Defender, mainly fitting of Ford engines and new dash - no vents.
2015 Defender planned to cease production.
In Australia there are significant differences. Landrovers were assembled in Australia from about 1950 until 1990, with a few local variations, the most significant being the use of the Isuzu 3.9 diesel in the Stage 1 and 110. The 90 was not sold in Australia until about 2002, and the old four cylinder Rover engines were never sold in the 110 in Australia.
The Term "County" is a trim level, used in Series 3, Range Rover, 110 and 90. Since the majority of 110 models sold in Australia were County trim station wagons, available with 3.5 V8 or Isuzu diesel, the term has been frequently misapplied to all pre-Defender 110s. It should be noted that 110 also was used as the model name of the uniquely Australian 120" and 6x6 Landrovers, both of which came with only the Isuzu engines, and did not have County trim.
Most County wagons have factory air and hence no front vents.
Push button door handles were introduced in 1987, and do not represent a model change. Similarly, disc rear brakes were an early change to Defenders (about 1992?), and do not coincide with the change of name.
All Landrovers from 1948 have had continuous modification due to feedback from users (and changes in suppliers!), and the major changes often do not coincide with changes in model designation - for example, there were major changes almost every month 1948 -1951.
Hope this helps
