Novated Lease
Just sitting here dreaming.
I'm being hunted for a new position elsewhere with more money and the opportunity to take a novated lease in lieu of the company Commode.
Well the Commode will get me to work and back and leave the Disco for the weekends and I couldn't park the Disco in the 1.95m clearance carpark at work (2" lift).
The Disco, as much as I am attached to her, won't last forever and this might be an opportunity to slide into something more recent. I was thinking recent 2nd hand Defender Td5
.
So to the point has anyone here any experience with novated leases:
Can I accessorise it during the lease period?
Will I be allowed to take it off road?
What is the clearance height for a standard Defender Xtreme?
Any other issues?

I have my Defender on a novated lease.
You can do what you want with the lease. As long as the lease company gets its money, it doesn't really care. In theory you should maintain the car to a state where it can be resold by the lease company should you default on the loan, but like I said, keep the money flowing and who worries.
You can accessorise it during the lease. See above. However, the accessories are not out of pre-tax $ unless they come with the vehicle off the showroom floor. However, you cannot modify the vehicle, eg turn it into a 110 dualcab.
Your new 4WD tyres will be permitted though as they are consumables. I bought a set of Kelly MSRs, $1050 fitted. Sold the OEM tyres for $550, with 50km on them. As that was out of pre-tax $, that's pretty much a zero-cost changeover. I'll try and pop through a set of muddies in a while too :-)
You'll get a lot of opinions about novate leases. The simple fact is that it will save you money if:
a) you do more than 16,000km a year
all your lease payments will save you the top rate of tax.
It was worth it for me. I also claimed my LROCV membership out of the lease too.
I have a lot more info on this, send me an email and I'll send you my novate-lease spreadsheet calculator which figures out the annual savings for you.
A NL makes a new car pretty attractive, more so than a young secondhand one.
At the end of the lease you either re-lease it or sell it and pay the lease company out (residual value). Unless you've nearly killed the car its value will be considerably more than the residual, leaving you $ in hand. However, after three years I'll probably re-lease it. Three years is too short a time when you consider all the accessories on the thing.

We have our D90 on novated lease and its working out superb, can claim for just abouyt everything (in reason) we claim on the diesel costs as well.
Have our min limit set at 15,000 Km per year which should easily be achieved.
Cant fault the thing so far seems the way to go....also banking on when our 3 year lease is up in 2007 that Land Rover will have the new defender up for grabs....nah...fat chance..
