I am not taking side for the car dealer but it is worth remember that he has to make a profit, add GST and give warranty or sell it off to a independent dealer for cheap. He profits on the new car is also smaller if you are a cash buyer..... m

A cash buyer don't hold the trump card.... the dealer finance one does as it's more profit for the dealer.
Sounds a pretty standard situation.
I also decided not to trade our D1 and instead to just do it up and use it for trips and towing the camper.
There are other things I'd rather spend the money on than a new car, which will lose half its value in three years anyway, so that's a lot of money thrown away.
If defenders lost half their value in 3 years no one would buy them new... jussayin.
Book value is a joke and doesn't reflect the market at all. My Defender has a book value of $12,000. But try buying one in the condition mine is for less than twice that, without even factoring the accessories.
But Ultimately you have to weigh up the deal and decide if you are happy or walking. But I see your point.
I know a salesman who traded a Defender Extream for $7000 and bought it himself. Then sold it 6 or so months later for a big profit. The trade is shonky make no bones about that. 17 years in the trade and its no better now. I'm glad I'm out of it.

$3000 for our 2001 disco offered as trade against a Mitsubishi. Still driving it but anyone offers me $9k they can have it. :p
I was offered $2000 for my hi km TD5 D2.
I bit the bullet and sold privately, but even then struggled to get the money I thought it was worth.
Younger bro found the same couldn't careless attitude when he wanted to sell his 9 year old Fairlane in absolutely top condition with just 15K on the clock.
Went into a couple of multi dealerships in Snidney and said he wanted to look at Rovers, Jags and maybe Mercs only be told 2.5 - maybe 4K for an "old' vehicle without them even bothering looking at it.
Then he was offered a Merc "optioned up" for 440K!!!!
"If I'm spending that sort of money" he said "I'll buy a Bentley" only to be advised "You'll have to make an appointment to see one of their advisers...."
Not wanting an audience with the Queen and not being in a hurry with anything these days, he got on the internet and found a dealer in the country who reckoned 12K if the Fairlane was as described so off he went and bought a top of the range RRS.
Dealer gave him the 12K and sold it the next day for 15K.:o The trade-in price was not of real interest to bro but getting some decent service was and he got it by going out of town.
Pays to take your time over these things and never take what stealers say as being anywhere near the truth.:D
