'I assume I'm not at your airport'

"Are you kidding me?" a Springfield controller responded.

....and it is not a joke

A Southwest Airlines pilot told an air traffic controller, "I assume I'm not at your airport" after landing about seven miles away from his intended destination in Branson, Missouri.

The transcripts convey the sense of bewilderment from both the pilot and controllers about the January 12 incident.

Landing at night using visual cues and not instruments, the pilot had to slam on the brakes to stop the Boeing 737 at M. Graham Clark Downtown Airport in Branson, whose runway is only about half as long as the strip at the main Branson airfield.

I think the Chinese search planes did something similar when they landed at Perth instead of the RAAF base.

Maybe they hadn't gotten advance approval to land at an Australian air force base?

Well at least it was a good landing.

Take off may be a little different.

They will probably have to strip out thousands of kgs of interior fittings and carry minimal fuel to get Vr.
