All that meat and no potatoes

I have a very firm agreement with sharks, I don't go in their water they don't come and drink at my local!

    Just a thought...

Lets put the latest tragic event into some perspective: 47 fatal shark in NSW over the last century (see Latest Figures | Taronga Conservation Society Australia). Roads deaths in NSW hover around 400 per year with 25,000 injuries. Preventable diseases (principally related to smoking) account for about 5,200 deaths per year with another 44,000 hospitalisations (again figures just for NSW).

While this is a very sad event, the judgement of the group swimming has to be looked at - a 3-4m Great White had been spotted for a week before hand cruising between Tathra and Merimbula and kept on coming back to the Tathra Wharf area where it had been seen a number of days before the attack and on the previous afternoon from the actual wharf.

The group (or at least some of them) were involved in the Surf Life Saving Club which is located on the nearby beach and would have certainly known about the large shark in the area and specifically in the area they would be swimming through.

Irrespective of this an extremely sad time for many people and my thoughts go out to the family.
