    300tdi lift pump

G'day all was out in the middle of the scrub on the weekend when me truck just died half way up a rather snotty big hill. After negotiating it to the bottom it then started then died again, like it wasn't getting fuel so after some guessing at what it was I turned on a little electric fuel pump (that the bloke who owned it before me installed for bleeding the line after filter changes) & away she went enough for me to get out & home. So I rang British off road & spoke to a bloke there & he said he had 2, 1 genuine @ $150 & 1 non-genuine @ $105, so asked him if they were the same, he replied with yes & there is nothing wrong with the after market one. So I ordered the after market one & it turns up & it is similar but not the same, I had to rebend 3 lines coming out of the injector pump because the new pump was 3/4 of inch longer & hit on the lines.
MORAL OF THE STORY if you have to replace your lift pump on your 300tdi go the genuine pump as the extra $45 is better than spending 3 hrs trying to fit the other piece of crap. I rang the guy back & was not impressed with his very rude attitude so I will not be shopping there or recommending them anymore.

so, Gidget,, it WAS a pump failure???

how often do tdi pumps fail???

I have dealt with British off road for a while now, (about6 years) and apart from the pricing never had any problems. never rudeness, a certain arrogance perhaps.

I have dealt with them for a while now & was good. I rang the bloke & when i said that the 2 pumps were not the same, he went on the defensive & he was crapping on to make it sound like my fault, needless to say i don't do that to my customers & I don't expect it to be done to me. the 2 pumps are clearly different legths & the outlet to the pump is not in the same position. But as I will not deal with twits they have done their dash & I will shop elsewhere from now on. As for how long the pump lasts, mine has done 185000 kms so I am not real sure. I have never heard anyone talk about them or having a problem with them before. It could have been a huge problem for me if I didn't have that extra little electric pump. In the middle of the scrub hills all round & at least 45min walk for phone reception to get a mate out to winch & tow me out.But ahh well these things happen, from now on I will be looking at how much room I have around a perticullar part before deciding weather to buy genuine or aftermarket.

There's been a couple of issues with 300Tdi lift pumps over the years.
A spacer was added to prevent them overstroking & a modified fuel line is now available to stop the pipe breaking on the pump itself.
The modified line runs from the pump to the filter & is part# WJP108350. It is a longer line with a coil to absorb vibration. Some cars need it, some get away for years without it :? .

    No.
Just the lift pump at the engine, then to the injector pump. Normally you don't realise the lift pump has stopped working as the injector pump seems to do a good job by itself. It's only when you need to prime the system after a filter change or, as Gidget found out, on a very steep climb.
Very difficult to explain to customers after a service when it came in running fine ops: , luckily that's not my job to explain this  .
