They're a great light.
I had a pair (not HID) for the best part of 30 years.
The housings eventually rusted out, not surprising for the age though.![]()
Latest toy has just arrived at home, sadly im in PNG:
Got 2 spread beams with HID 75w @ 4300K.
Always wanted a set, since the old rally days. Got them from someone who builds them for the heritage rally crowd. Plus the 70's design matches the Defender.
Amazing how many toys you can bolt to a defender, a bit like a boat.
Have great expectations for these.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

'12 Defender 90![]()
I've just bought myself a set of 9 inch 160 watt LED
Spotties for the D3. Got em on special for 495 shipped for the pair
From a reputable seller in Victoria. They crap on any HID's I've had in the past.
The super oscars cibies are an awesome light though. I have em on my 911 period rally car.
I am now trying to justify a set of Super Oscar's Spots for the roof, no logical reason of course , but ............... your dead for a long time.

As another long time fan of Cibie lights and in particular Super Oscars, I had Super Oscars on an XD Falcon van years ago when doing a lot of interstate work and Cibie H4 replacement head lights in one of my GT Cortinas, you never need to justify spending money on Cibie products there just a logical choice![]()
Super Oscars must be just about the most famous light of all time.
So, can you still buy them new, & are they still the same as they were 30 yrs ago?
Pickles.
Nothing has changed, same technology path as a Defender
I avoided Ebay and found a switched on guy in Vic, who appears passionate.
He got them from Cibie rep to my spec, (two spreads), had my Bulb 75w 4300k in stock, and gave me a finished product in 4 days.
Not the cheapest light by any means, but gives me a quality solution that matches the Defender 'retro' look. Together with the Traxide loom they should pump.![]()

G'Day AndyG
would you have a contact for the guy in Vic?
Thanks
Nick
I have had my Cibie Oscars since the late 60's cost me a bomb, used them on most of my cars except the 2a,it doesn't go fast enough to need spot lights, and my RRC had Hella Rally 1000's when I got it and with the Carello asymetrics and Narva 60/55's +50% and through a New-Era double relay, I very rarely use the Hella units in normal semi-rural night driving unless doing long distance, I also run 60/55+50% in the D1 and have no problems,by using a double relay it takes the Amperage (heat) away from the switch, which is a known headlight failure point.
