    Dodging the Swear Filter?

I know about the swear filter. I have read the sticky. However, I have a question.

Normally I have only an academic interest in the issue because I find that I can express myself without having to hope that the filter does its job.

Recently however, I copied and pasted a joke which contained a mild swear word. I considered editing the joke, but decided I was happy to see the swear filter in action, so I left it as it was.

The swear filter did its job and the offending word appeared in the post as a number of asterisks. So far so good.

I then discovered to my horror that there was a full stop missing from the bit I had pasted, so I did an edit and inserted the missing punctuation mark. Then it occurred to me in the split second after I had clicked the "Save" button, that I was effectively posting something that technically looked like an attempt to dodge the swear filter since it contained asterisks that were obviously replacing an offensive word.

It appears that I have not been sent to the naughty corner or even warned about being sent there if I continue to transgress.

I don't expect to find myself in a similar situation again, but I am curious. Why didn't my post constitute an attempt to dodge the filter?

Does the swear filter operate without human intervention but only look at the original version of the post? Does it ignore re-saved posts? Was the technical dodge in the edited version flagged, but dealt with by a mod who understood what had happened?

As I said, this is really only of academic interest to me.

that I was effectively posting something that technically looked like an attempt to dodge the swear filter since it contained asterisks that were obviously replacing an offensive word.
Can I ask why you think placing a full stop would constitute a dodge?

dodging the swear filter is done by replacing words with symbols or numbers (this is the same for trying to actively dodge the filter or trying to self censor) this means that if you put an $ instead of an S then the four letter swear word that begins with that letter wont be picked up by the filter.....
so rather than the filter automatically starring out the word it wont star it at all because it doesnt see it as a word...

also placing spaces between each letter that spells out a swear word will also inhibit the filter from recognising it as a swear word...

adding full stop to the end of a sentance even if the last word is a swear word is not a filter dodge.

Have I explained that well enough? only asking as I'm finding it hard to visualise what your trying to explain

I recently got Mod-ed for swearing.
After I got the warning, i emailed it back to find out if it was generated or written by someone.
I was told it was generated, but written.(straightaway)
So am guessing there has to be someone sitting there (maybe) or a rooolly sophistimacated compooota system...........

When you post a swear word, such as "****", you will notice it replaces all the letters with asterisks. This is fine and is not considered dodging the swear filter.
The problem occurs when people try to self censor and type a letter and three asterisks or replace a vowel with an asterisk which prevents the swear filter from doing it's job but the word is easily worked out.
Just type the word, correctly spelled, with no spaces or special characters and let the swear filter do it's job and all will be fine.
Better still, don't use swear words altogether. You don't see me typing "Belgium".
Hmmmm...... That one is not in the filter.

Yes I understand the explanation. It is the same as what I understood from the sticky.

It wasn't the full stop that concerned me. It was the four asterisks that the swear filter had put there when I first posted the joke.

It is in the line starting "So Jane called him a ..". The next word is obviously a swear word.

The other thing I would like to point out about dodging here is

some people do it with words that are not even in the filter.....these people get treated the same way even if the word was in the filter.

    Why?

because as I explained to someone recently its not about the word that was dodged it was the act of doing it.

so you may note that dickhead is not in the filter

however if you typed d1ckhead <<<<then this is obviously someone trying to make sure the word gets past the filter as why else would you use a number to replace a letter.

****** is also not in the filter however typing it like this Wa**ker is still a dodge, as its the act of actually replacing letters that shouldn't be replaced, does that make sense?

I looked at the link and no it is not a dodge because head isn't a swear word and if you typed the swear word just like this ****head you will see that it only stars out the offensive part adding a full stop as I have already said is not a dodge its just punctuation

Dave is wondering why when he edited, thus reposting an auto-filtered post, it wasn't considered as a dodge/self censor.

because he edited it by putting in a full stop was the way I understood him, that is not altering the original word that was already filtered, dodging is the act of changing a word to avoid a filter not changing an already filtered post to apply punctuation.

    It's Allan, not Dave.

All of that is the way I understood things worked.

However, I still don't have an answer to my questions.

When I clicked "Save", I was posting something that included four asterisks starting a word that was obviously a swear word.

I didn't put the asterisks there. The swear filter did. However what I was re-posting looked as if it included an attempt to dodge the filter, even though I didn't put the asterisks there.
