I used to do this with no issue but when I found that the 15L containers were so versatile I changed to those. I often used them to collect bore water, creek or rainwater for washing and showering, so started the habit of marking as I emptied the drinking water and sterilising after each trip.

Empty the contents out store upside down with the lids off. Rinse out and fill up. Been my system for years, 100% agree with look for cracking and damage as they age, and replace as required

Not a bad idea to put them upside down so they dry completely.

The other thing to watch (apart from UV decay) is losing the washers in the caps. Don't always assume they're still there!

    Isn't experience wonderful? DL

I've always emptied them out and put the lid back on tight to stop insects getting in. Store the plastic containers out of sunlight, which degrades the plastic and causes bacteria growth. When I go to use them, I just rinse them out. No problems so far.
