I own a td5 02 and utmost these things ride way better than any jap **** i have driven
altough at the moment i have a small issue on engine temp i think it might be the water pump how do u know when its not pumping / working well because temp rises on the highway to anywhere from 93 to 102 deg its had a new radiator hoses thermastat coolant bit confussed at the moment

Hi and Welcome,
I to have a TD5 overheating problem, in my case new radiator and pump, I don't know about the thermostat but my fan hub is faulty.
I don't know the 'official' way to test it but if the motor is hot the fan should be hard to turn.
There is a gel in the hub, when cold it is stiff to turn when it warms up it seems to get runny, easy to turn but when it gets up to a certain temp it goes thick and ensures the fan works to draw air through the radiator.
If your motor is over hot and you can turn the fan easily it is faulty.
With my motor running and the shroud off I can (very gingerly, it's probably not recommended)stop the fan, even spin it backwards, it's stuffed!

I test them using a heavy rag,like a towel or old pair of jeans.
Gently touch the fan with the rag with the motor running cold first,see how much resistance is there.
Then take it for a drive to get it hot,should be plenty of resistance touching the fan whilst idling.
No or little resistance means the clutch is guggered.
Yes my D2 ent backwards too when it was hot,couldnt do it with the Defenders TD5.
