Not really. We are already harvesting pretty much all that is harvestable. There are also very few suitable areas another dam can be built.
The fact that the last few good years have only managed to fill the dams to 80% is also telling. The answer is we need more rain. Doesn't look as if that is going to happen anytime soon.
Reduction in population would help. Desal plants will also help quench our thirst for water.
Personally, I think further investigation in the idea of piping it from the wetter areas of the country should be done.

Personally, I'm of the opinion, if you don't like the climate, move to an area which has a climate more suited to your needs.

The cancelled Mary river dam , again would double southern Qld water capacity as it was almost the same size as the wivenhoe dam.

FWIW The Mary River proposal was ill considered from the start. An optimal design for a dam requires minimal surface area for max volume... that's why deep relatively narrow gorges are prized... if avaliable. At the other end of the scale was the Mary River catchment which is very broad and relatively shallow... leading to massive evaporation loss. The ill fated Wolfdene proposal during the late 80s early 90s down Loganway would have been ideal... but sometimes politics outweighs sensible engineering:eek::wasntme:

I am only talking about Victoria. That's where I live. I'm not real concerned about the other states.
I've worked in the water, mining, petrochem and other industries which has involved desal and RO plants here and around the world. Desal isn't as dirty as you make out. Desal is an acceptable method of water supply augmentation here and around the world.

Mick, I do not remember any drought in 1996. I was living in Melb until 2000.

I then moved to country Vic where drought hit around 2002. In November 2002 stage one restrictions were introduced in Melb.

Your memory is fine. There was no drought in 1996.
1996 was before the drought. In 1996 Victorian dam capacity was in the high 90's and there were no water restrictions.
In 1997 we started heading into the drought that we didn't start to climb out of until 2010.

Interestingly, when you look at the inflows of the drought years, the droughts are getting more severe and more frequent.

It's worth noting, the climate scientists have been predicting south east Australia will become a drier place. This prediction looks as if it is coming true.
I don't know what is predicted for the rest of Australia.

Oops sorry, forgot climate change will only effect Victoria :D.
Unfortunately the never full quote was for the WHOLE eastern seaboard.
My opinions are not from one source, just a lazy 10 sec google.
Now please show us any link or source that will show a desal plant in Vic today is cheaper or lower in carbon emissions per megalitre than a series of dams on your Mitchell River with a hydro set up, or even without, over a 10 then 50 year time frame.

Yep, even Tony Abbott admits climate change is real. The 'is it real' argument is over - now the argument is how best to respond to it, I reckon. This country used to be a leader in responses to climate change, but now we've fallen way behind the others.

it is because of political vote catching propaganda that the current govt started over 5 yrs ago.

anyone who spoke of climate change and or global warming got the biggest pasting and ridicule imaginable.

the only reason Abbot has backflipped is because the worlds political leaders that he has met and spoken to since becoming PM , all support necessary action to be taken toward the inevitable result that is becoming apparent as a result of climate change and global warming. Abbott could not afford to be seen contesting the debate by the rest of the world.

It's pity this can't go to the top where it can be seen by more than those just looking for an argument......
